The Audi interior looks fairly basic and minimalist, even if it's not. I actually prefer the Golf dashboard, but I'll be very disappointed if they don't even provide the Pro navigation as an option. (I've pretty much given up on them offering the Dynaudio upgrade in Australia, despite how good an option it is from a price/performance perspective.) Also keen to find out if the leather offered in Australia is of the Vienna or Nappa variety - in Germany, the R gets the latter for the first time, and it's a big step up.

The S3 looks like an excellent option price-wise, until you add the Performance Pack and a sunroof, and it's a low-mid $70k proposition.

I actually sat in the S3 with a friend of mine (when the salesmen weren't shooing us away, because arriving dressed in nice jeans and a new shirt means I'm scum) and I found it very cramped personally, barely more spacious than my previous Polo GTI. While I am 6ft6 it shouldn't be that easy to have elbow fights in a medium hatch.

IMO the interior look and feel of the S3 is miles ahead. The look and quality are miles ahead of the GTI and based on pictures of the R, it looks very similar to the GTI (with a few subtle differences).

I like the look of the R enough that I would be happy with it, although the interior is now the major deal breaker for me these days. I can't get over how it just looks so similar, generation after generation and if I am dropping 60k on a car, then I want something that feels 'special' inside and for me, it (unfortunately) definitely lacks that :s

Well for me personally i think the interior of GTI/R is miles ahead of the rest (BMW/Merc/Audi, etc).
I love in the interior of my MK6 GTI and glad it is relatively the same on the MK7. It is an awesome looking interior IMHO.

That's true on paper for the price of an S3 with S Performance Pack, but when you actually sit down and nut out a deal, you'll find that you can get around 7% off the rrp, so realistic price is more like $66k - $67 drive away.

Absolutely Longy, whilst I won't be able to stretch to the S3 with PP, a base S3 + tint has been secured at $62k driveway. For me the R with leather is going to have to come in at least $5k cheaper and even then the S3 just looks like a classier package (particularly with no Discover Pro included with the R and ? leather to be an expensive add on).

Saw a blue R this afternoon. Definitely obviously different on the road (even more so from behind with the better taillights).

Took an S3 for a test drive yesterday.
Cons - very cramped feel compared to my mk7.
    Blind spots were more noticeable.
Drive away price was quite high once you added some options.
Pros- ride was amazing, stuck to the road like glue, but was very comfortable and livable when in comfort mode.
Power... Very little turbo lag. (Test drove one with dsg) responsive and very quick, dare I say it, to me did it felt almost as quick as the A45 I drove the other week.
Interior- beautiful finish. Hi res screen is great and is very responsive, lots of great features and very customizable. Not the same can be said for the mk7 discover media. (WHERE IS MY DISCOVER MEDIA PRO?!)
Sound system -( mine had the sport pack which includes the bang and olfsuan) it was very clear and crisp with being able to be very loud without distorting. Even has a subwoofer in the boot.
Once thing I was worried about with the s3/R was it would not have room for a spare wheel (even if it is a space saver) having Quattro, however this is not a problem
Am interested to know will the mk7 R have the same magnetic ride as the S3?
Also really liked the boost gauge in the instrument cluster. Hope the R will have something similar.
So I think the S3 might have it over the R for me, but i am still going to wait for the R for a definite decision.... Might even hold off the the S3 plus if that ever becomes a reality

Does the S3 B&O subwoofer take away much in the way of boot space or spare wheel?

No boot space is lost. It sits inside the wheel well of the space saver. Space saver and tools still all in there. Really cleaver I think
