Dad has ordered an S3 DSG with performance pack (with MRC) and assistance pack and it's already in the country. It has a sunroof as well that he didn't want but hey he gets one of the first batch! Should be delivered before the end of January. Who knows how many strikes the warfies will carry on with at Christmas though and block it in customs (very well known problem).
Ive read that the manual S3 has definite turbo lag but the DSG seems to mask this very well.
He has an R and I've had 2 GTI's. I changed over to an A250 Sport Merc that I absolutely love. Never thought I'd stray from VW.
We drove a 1.8 sportback DSG with dynamic suspension control to get a rough idea about the sports suspension in the S3 but with the MRC suspension I think it should be more absorbent by all reports when in comfort. I've read very good things about MRC in other Audis and HSV's etc.
i think the S3 will suit him much more than an A45 AMG. That thing is completely NUTS! It's on a different level of performance but would be very difficult to live with daily. The suspension in my A250 is very close to being too hard but it has brilliant damping so not harsh.
Dad wasn't prepared to wait til at least July for an R and the price gap is far more reasonable now to the S3. Oh well, VW have lost another sale after I was very unimpressed with their inability to get me a GTI with multiple options. I had been in discussion with my dealer for almost 12 months and they couldn't get me a car until about mid year either. Not good enough.
At least now I can have a go in dad's S3 soon. It's going to be pretty hard to top his R which was a faultless machine.

Nice one - we expect plenty of photos and videos!

I've heard from an Audi salesman in Geelong that the Audi Connect online features (such as Google Earth navigation, etc) will arrive down under sometime next year so I'll be waiting for that. Maybe it'll coincide with the Golf R release (Navigation Pro option) as well.

What's the 3 depreciation you expect on a Golf R? Roughly?

I test drove a manual S3 over the weekend, it had the MRC, I switched it between dynamic and comfort, to be honest, I could not feel too much difference, maybe a bit less bouncy in comfort vs dynamic. But even in dynamic, car didn't shutter on bumps in the road.

And yes, there is a slight lag when you put your foot down, but once she goes, it's a blast!

Will hopefully be able to test drive a s-tronic S3 this weekend.

Yes, the AMG cars might be more powerful, but plenty more expensive, and was told by someone who was buying brake pads for those big 4wd merc, it was going to cost him $2800, but at least it wasn't as expensive as AMG brake pads which was $10000!

3 year depreciation on the Golf R and the S3 should be around 55% most punters want the latest

Wouldn't looking at 3 year old Mk6 Golf R's for sale help answer the question?
