    Mk7 golf r - what to pay

    Hi all,

Seems like there are some great deals about with the release of the MY16 mk7 r.

I am interested in the R for the drivetrain and don't really care too much about colour/options/missing out on gadgets and just want to pay the best price.

The new/demo MY15s on carsales appear to go as low as 48k on road with many others up to around 53k.
Would prefer dsg and blue or grey but for the right price anything would be fine.

Any opinions on what I should be aiming for in terms of price? To be honest even the advertised prices seem great, and am thinking around 50k on road for a dsg in blue/grey with no options would be a winner.

    thanks,
    Adam

Adam, that's quite smart. I was also not interested in the options just DSG. If it's late model MY15 should have the latest turbo revision as the early one ones can have failures. I got black with DSG and tinted windows and cost me $55 on corporate rates as I got in right at start.

I'd say get DSG model and try to push for $49,990 OR. Many will want the MY16 with leather interior and drivers assist standard but I'm with you I'd get MY15 for 10k less.

The stock interior ages well, mine is 16 months old and still brand new looking, my wifes S3 only 6 months old and leather showing signs of wear.

Unless you clean car lots or get opti coat try to avoid black, I got it and looks fantastic clean but shows dirt badly.

So glad you said this, I knew the Vienna vs Nappa leather would definitely show over time with the softer Audi leather wearing more. Just another reason to R > S3.

Mine's not showing the slightest signs of wear after 6 months - still exactly as smooth and soft as the day I picked it up. But then the Vienna leather in my GTI took a couple of years to start to show any signs of age.

The difference in quality of leather between the R and the S3 is, to be blunt, vast.

My father has an S3 as well, which is now 14 months old. The leather in that is still in tip-top condition also. Any leather seats will show signs of age if you're sufficiently rough, but then the same can be said of cloth on the side bolsters etc.

Actually, question for you. In the Audi is the whole seat leather or only the exposed parts? It really bugs me that the sides of the Golf leather seat are cloth.

The entirety of the seat is leather, save a couple of inset panels in the centre backrest that are a suede/alcantara-type material.

I was also pleasantly surprised how much luggage can fit into the Golf R. We just returned from trip to Hawaii and came back with 3 large suitcaes, 2 small carry on style suitcases and backpack. That all fit in with myself, wife and son in his car seat.

I was testing it before we went away in both the R and the s3 sedan and only the R fit it in.

I'm not saying in any way R better than s3 because in almost every way IMO the S3 better, nicer interior, way more features, way better nav screen etc. But I prefer the looks of R in hatch form and I prefer how easy the touch screen is to operate and change songs etc on steering wheel where as S3 bit harder to figure out.

I'll keep my wifes s3 standard and have my R stage 2 with DSG tune and other minor goodies so driving wise the R destroys it!

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a dealership that is likely to have stock and more importantly, not going to be painful to deal with? I'm in Darwin but will buy from anywhere in Aus. Have started with car sales but expecting it to be a slow and painful process even though I'm ready to sign immediately for the right deal.
