    Mk7 Golf R exhaust drone

    Hi all,

Just took a test drive of the GTI PP and the Golf R. Was all set on getting the R but one thing stood out like a sore thumb was the exhaust drone on the R! It was loud and I thought it would get quite annoying after a while. I tried all driving modes and it was still there.

Looking though google, there seems to be an issue with the Australian and Japanese spec R's in which the exhaust is permanently "open" causing the drone. The GTI was absolutely perfect in terms of driving and low speed noise which made me lean towards that as this would be my daily car.

Also a bit more googling seems like there might be a software update from VW dealers that would eliminate the drone in all but the race mode. Can someone confirm this? I already put down a deposit for the GTI pp mainly because of the drone I heard in the test drive. If this is indeed fixed it would sway me to the R again.

    Thanks

Chances are much of the drone you heard was down to the Soundaktor, which can be disabled or turned down by the dealer or anyone with VCDS. See:

    Soundaktor
Q: What does sport mode do? A: Makes the SoundAktor louder. :-/

    And to disable it:

VCDS (VAG-COM) codes and programmable options for Golf Mk7

2005 MkV Volkswagen Golf 2.0 FSI Auto

I'm not sure. pixelbend's post on here

says his was an update specific to the drone issue. Not sure if that's the Soundaktor. The drone is a low hum at low speeds.
I just don't want to spend 65k on something that will annoy me daily.

Not sure, it's a low hum/drone at lower rpm. pixelbend on the link says he got it fixed by a software update, not sure if that is the Soundaktor. I just don't want to spend 65k and then regret my choice with the otherwise great GTI PP

Mine doesn't drone 1 bit. I am sure it's the SoundAktor you are gearing. Mine's been disabled from day 1.......

Mine drones at 80km/h in 6th under a load in a tunnel, but otherwise fine. But I also pulled the plug on the sound generator from day 1.
