The Mk 7 arrived today. I now have 4 cars sitting the front of the house lol. A young fella is driving 5 hours each way to look at the Mk6 on Sunday so should be back to 3 after that (fingers crossed). The fuel guzzling Mazda may be with us for a while...
The Mk 7 is on a totally different level to the older car. The new car feels slower but that's probably the tight 45km old engine and a smoother power delivery to blame for that. The handling is a revelation though. So much more chuckable. The Mk 6 was a comfortable and quick cruiser but this car makes me want to go the back road much more than the older car did.
It is bloody noisy though! I think I may be getting that Soundaktor turned down at some point. It's great when on it but I thought the off switch (comfort) would be more off than it is.
Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD
Previous - Mk 6 R manual; Mk 7 R manual; Passat 130 TDi Wagon. Mk 7.5 Wolfsburg Wagon.
I thought exactly the same re noise, turned it down to 60%......now I think its perfect !!!

Soundaktor is surprisingly loud. I don't remember it being that loud during my (many) test drives but I guess I wasn't too focused on that
^ Pop the drive select into Eco for some time out from the Soundakator particularly where youre just putting around town or on the freeway, you still get a nice little DSG burp on gear change and induction sound but no drone or intrusive sound (this is the de facto mode for my +1). I usually drive in Comfort/Normal mode and am quite happy with the soundakator, occasionally pop it into Race for a squirt in my local twisties, changeing gears manually, its quite a hoot, super taut and firm on the road, heavy/precise steering, riotous engine note, great fun
Well the slow acceleration problem returned today. Refused to pull up a hill. Discovered I was in Eco mode when I thought I was in Race so that's that problem sorted.
Still getting used to how alive the car feels over the Mk 6. I pc an see what all the journo's were raving about.
I am a bit miffed that I can only silence the exhaust by putting the engine into Eco mode which, and let's be honest, is sh*te to drive, as opposed to commute. A stealth mode would be ideal lol. Unless the engine response is markedly affected by the flapper setting, being able to silence the exhaust and soundaktor but keep the throttle response would be welcome. (Edit: AT TIMES! Maybe one for the Mk 8.
The start/stop and auto hold are much better calibrated in this car than the Passat. I can have both work at the same time in the Golf but only one or the other in Passat. Push the clutch and she fires up and drive off. Brilliant.
The radar cruise is brilliant brilliant brilliant. Yeah, brilliant. Stereo isn't too bad given I had Dynaudio and a sub previously. I'll see how it goes but I'm not suffering massive sub withdrawal yet. It was only an 8" though.
If I was pushed I'd say the only things the Mk 6 pips the Mk 7 on are: the wing mirrors seem smaller on the new car, the window switches and side mirror adjustment require two wrists to use comfortably. And the piano black screams tacky. I suspect the boot is a touch smaller too. Looks shallower anyway.
Otherwise it drives, sounds and feels better in all areas. Well pleased. Even happy with the 19s to which I have had an ideological aversion to (big wheels) for years. This car rides better on 19s in Race mode than the Mk 6 does on 18s in all modes (comfort mode in Mk 6 makes most people sea sick I've found).
It tucks in quite nicely on a trailing throttle. Bear in mind I've driven Peugeot 205 and 106 in the distant past so that comment is relative - this car tucks in where they would require looking out the side (or even rear) window to see where you were going if you backed off in a corner lol? The Mk 6 didn't move...

I tried eco mode when I first had the car and never used it again after that hahah...
Just approaching 5000 kms now and I find the exhaust sound seems to be slightly louder, not annoying just louder. I'm also becoming less bothered by the exhaust drone around 1500 - 2000 rpm.
I'm afraid my car might also be affected by the rattle from the soundaktor. It's very faint at the moment and seems to come and go. I'll probably let it developed further before trying to fix it. Other than that, car is great and is still a joy to drive.
