So, the tune is interesting, definitely not mind blowing like the initial driving of the R.

Power delivery is not as linear as stock but not exactly violent either, somewhere balanced in the middle there tittering on the violent side.

I would say some enjoyment is probably nullified by my concern of the turbo potentially failing but hopefully that will subside over time...

    Hey guys,

I have been a long time lurker and have followed and read this thread since way back near the beginning. Last week I took delivery of my new Pure white MY15 Golf R manual with leather, assistance and sun roof. Very happy so far as I only got to test drive the DSG. They have done a great job with the 6 speed manual and the clutch seems fairly solid too.

The car is leased so I am currently fighting the bug to mod the car (not sure if I will win this fight). I would never tune/mod a car that has less than around 5000kms anyway but I may look to put an intercepting chip in rather than a flash like APR as to the best of my knowledge they are totally undetectable when removed?? Are there any downsides to them over a full blown flash?

Anyway, glad this thread exists as there is plenty of good info in it!

A couple of photos from the weekend when I waxed the R with my mates GTI PP.

    Welcome to the forum trippin
Very nice photo's you have there.
As a quick summary on the TD1 flag. Any tune flash/tuning box will alter numbers in the ECU and 'possibly' raise a TD1 flag (read numerous threads where tunes almost always show up,tuning boxes mostly don't).This can only be seen when dealerships send all there info to Germany (during a big warranty claim usually) as the dealerships themselves only have software that goes to a certain level and the most they would see would be fault codes or numbers that are unusual for certain readings or anything to do when they use VCDS with is quite thorough.

I myself have run a multichannel tuning box (the best) for 12000km with no problems but thats only because of my location. I would've went APR as proper tunes have a lot more controlling measures to make it safer.

    Cheers mate.

My next question would of been - do tuning boxes have limitations on what they can adjust, ie just boost map, fuel? I know a full flash would also control timing and potentially be safer. It sucks that no one has has definite on what does or doesnt raise the TD1 flag.

My worry is obviously that a tune will not only break the warranty terms but also invalidate the lease terms?? I dont thrash my car around most of the time and I live in Canberra which gets a fairly cool climate for a good portion of the year.

If that's how you feel, I would recommend you revert to stock - especially if it's not blowing you away from a performance perspective. Live with it stock for a couple of years - plenty of time for any gremlins in the turbo to appear if they're going to (whilst it's still under warranty), and also plenty of time for VW to potentially release any final revisions of the turbo, and/or issue any factory recalls they may decide to do. Then, once everything has settled down and you're not paranoid about it, go and tune without the worry.

    Nah I will get over it, just having a crappy run this week with the following;

Monday - Tune + Downpipe booked in - Tune went MIA, Tune rebooked for Thursay (stupid busy at work with the storms)
Tuesday - CEL (downpipe without tune), took car in for the Tune
Today - CEL (faulty O2 sensor)

What tomorrow has instore for the R, who knows.

Ill get back to you on what my tuning box exactly connects to. It connects to 4 different sensors plus the box itself which also has 9 settings of which mine is set on 7.
With an APR intake and the box i do 0-100 times on average of 3.8/3.9 with best time being 3.75 using launch control last night in 29 degrees and 80% humidity so the performance is there.

    EDIT:
Here is a photo i found on my email of what it attaches to.

TD1 flags when raised are permanent. It cannot be reset by dealers.

When Dealer connects vehicle to database, if TD1 is positive it is stored permanently attached to your VIN number on VW Groups database in Germany. Doesn't matter if you revert to stock, etc.

But, my thoughts have always been, if I tune and get more performance out of a tune I am voiding all warranty related to that tune anyway. If VW honour any kind of warranty post tune its a bonus.
