Good response matedidn't think of all that, all I really could think of was that they where trying to re-coup all of the R&D money invested, but then realised that all the R&D has been done by APR so all should cost the same… thanks
Is there anything stopping us from buying an intake or other hardware items from an APR dealer in the states, [which for intake should be no more the 100$ to ship here], and fitting ourselves if mechanically knowledgeable, or getting an apr dealer to fit it, after all that you would still be better off surely. obviously we cannot get the corresponding software changes without paying for them but it seems exuberant almost doubling the standalone cost…..
gets me thinking![]()
One of the main reasons I bought the R was to get a sunroof... GTI PP = no sunroof = no purchase. The other stuff in the R (AWD, added power, subtle treatment etc) is all good too!

Just do your homework and check any extra GST etc. that may be payable on anything that you purchase.
Have emailed an apr dealer in the states and will possibly be setting up group buys for people who are willing, he thinks he can sell everything to us apart from the hardware items that design is affected due to LHD issues...
they have quoted 55$ for shipping and 450$ for the intake to be shipped to Brisbane qld
more info to come. And they said if they send as a gift it will not incur gst costings
Look I understand that EVERYONE is trying to make an honest living, but I don't see that if you can save yourself some cash in the process you would be dumbfounded not too. Obviously there are some things we cannot buy an fit ourselves and that's fine but I don't see the point in forking out double for the exact same product, and fair enough there are some people out there who aren't mechanically inclined and do need the shop to do certain things, and good on them for doing what they love, but if there is an alternative them people are going to take it, especially when you can save in excess of 400$ on one product, imagine how much you would save once you get to stage 2 or 2+.
I don't think the order can be stopped, from an unknown dealer in the states to an unknown shipping address I just don't understand how it's possible
The problem/challenge as I see it with the APR product/pricing in Australia is that in the supply chain there is a manufacturer, an importer, a reseller and the government also takes a cut in the form of import duties and GST. In the US there is only a manufacturer and reseller plus a lot more competition in the marketplace so it's a no-brainer that you're going to see cheaper pricing in the US.
I agree it's frustrating seeing the pricing that other places in world get for the same product. In the past people have tried to go around the exclusive agreements that have been in place to protect the APR dealers in Australia. Although it may be possible to find a US based dealer to ship to a forwarder, what you are doing (in a small way) is killing the local industry.
Now I'm all for competition and getting good deals on parts. If you don't want to pay full price perhaps you're better off waiting until the next APR sale. That way you can get a discount as well as support the local guys.
