Andrew, will you go to the trouble and expense to have paint correction and Opti-Coat sealer applied to this colour? Does your insurance cover you for the last application?

Andrew 7 I would get another GOLF R after all that car save your life, I would definitely get another one since you already put it to the test.
Mine is white with the leather, driving package and roof, and I have to say that it looks great in that color.

Agreed Sergio ,its no exaggeration to say the safety systems in the Golf R and driver assistance saved my life. Incredibly there was no cabin intrusion, all 7 airbags deployed, my seat belts pretensioned with no subsequent seat belt injury, and I had minimal whiplash even though I went from 100kmh to zero in a split second. The car braked within approximately 50 metres from the impact and the car did not career off into the trees etc In a car 10 years old I would likely be dead (I know this from experience as I am an Intensive Care Paramedic (MICA)).

To answer your question Mikey1 re Opticoat, I'm not sure it is necessary with pure white (as to insurance my lease will be paid out and the opticoat was built in so believe so). Certainly with the Lapiz Blue it was a no-brainer. If I decide to go again with the R I will be instead prioritise optioning whisper bar roof racks, bike carrier, snow chains, boot tub (already have a Thule Luggage pod) to turn the R into an all purpose family mini "wagon" (though it must be said from next year there will be only my wife and 11 year old son at home with my 2 daughters off to Uni next year so the R should do the job!).

Firstly, glad to hear you're ok Andrew. What I don't understand is how the car detected an impassable object from 50m away and didn't manage to pull up before that? We tested my Mk6 GTI a few times from 100km/h and it took around 40-45m to stop. Does the collision avoidance system not apply full braking?

From reading the Glossary in the brochure on how Front Assist with City Emergency Brake function works, it appears in Andrew's incident, only the Front Assist applies by automatically braking to reduce the severety of the impact. This technology, though imperfect, is still far better than without it. It makes you wonder why it is not standard fitment.

It's just like ABS and any other "advanced" technology - it costs money. It will move from optional extra to standard fitment once the R&D has been recouped.

Where did the cow go? Did it hit the front left quarter and pass down the LHS. I imagine had you hit it square on, it would have gone over the bonnet & crushed windscreen & the roof & you would have been in more strife. A black beast was it? Near impossible to see.

Also assuming you go the R route again, how longs the wait atm? I want to buy one and was wondering if there are enough available to walk in and buy one or is it order and long wait only?

This is just a $1k option on the R. Even though the designers made no attempt to integrate the sensor in a less conspicous way, it surely is a no brainer to select, based on this real life case of it saving Andrew from a more serious outcome.

The real reason its optional is parts supply. VAG has had delays due to the lack of ACC units for a solid year now.

Correct Mikey1, and to clarify as I crossed paths on the dark country highway with a 4WD I was unsighted as to what was directly ahead, the 4WD at the last moment noticed the Bull walking on the roadside on my side just as we passed (had no time to warn/flash me) and a split second later as I hit high beam it had strolled directly across the road and directly into my path (with precision timing as it were). The other car heard the impact and turned around. I'm not sure I even had a chance to break but the car did indeed break (saw skid marks on the road) and came to a complete stop on the other side of the road about 50 metres along- I believe this was primarily auto breaking. Quite impressive really.

(correct Logger) I did manage to pull the steering wheel a fraction to the right in the split second before impact which accounts for the damage primarily to the front passenger quarter of the engine/car with the Bull coming up and hitting the windscreen on the passenger side and flying off along the left/passenger side (minor dints on front and rear passenger doors). I was extremely fortunate to be able to do this as logger points out had I hit it squarely front on or if it was facing me rather than side on it could have fully impacted the windscreen and I could have been in big trouble….

Have spoken to my dealer and evidently there are still a few R's with leather and DA available in Oz at present so I won't have a problem sourcing a replacement vehicle it appears.

By the way for the sake of completeness just drove a WRX CVT, not a bad all round package but god the engine note is uninspiring and the CVT whilst was quick in sport/manual mode is very plain jain and not a patch on the R/GTI 6 spd DSG. Further, no DSG farts and no induction noise, a bit like driving a Camry
