The S3 costs ~$5k more but comes standard with leather seats, a nicer infotainment system, 18" wheels (in case you don't like 19s) and possibly one or two other things I've forgotten.

The S1 engine is a variation of the GTIs engine, whereas the R/S3 is running a larger turbo.

I think it allows you to turn off the interior sensors when you are in the car so you don't set off the alarm when the doors are locked

Yes, it disables the alarm (i.e. for if you ever need a tow). The manual lists other use cases

The S3 also misses out on a rear arm-rest and pass through hatch, rear cupholders (arm rest+holders a $400 option), sunglass storage and the storage bin under the headlight switch.......

Anyone had any gearbox issues? I got a gearbox error on mine today saying reverse was unselectable and front assist was disabled. At the same time, lost the gear indicator on the display (D1, etc), and wouldn't change. Pulled over and turned the engine off and on again. Seemed ok for a couple of minutes but then got the same message again (repeated the process a few times). Now have a warning light on which indicates a faulty catalytic converter! Looks like the VW dealer will be getting a call first thing tomorrow!!
While this is disappointing, I've been loving the car so far!!

How many kms have you done so far? This is a real bummer. First I hear of DSG issues on a mk7. Do you launch the car often?
