Hi Guys,
I picked up my Golf R yesterday and the sales person knew nothing about the car so I was not really shown how everything works. I have a few Qs I am hoping someone can explain to me -
- Drivers Assistance Package. Can someone please tell me what exactly does it do and how do I make it work. I understand the car brakes when cars are in front of me or something?
- Does the R have that option where the car parks it self? I saw a lot of parking options in the manual but can not really work it out.
- finally, I saw there is 5 options eco,, normal, sport etc... In a brief summary, what are the main differences between each, and what will driving in sport mode do differently to normal?? What are you guys driving in mostly?
Thanks heaps for any help!!
Regards
Craig

Hi Craig
We just had a Golf with Driver Assist delivered. I assume it's similar to the features on the R so you should have Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist with Emergency Braking and driver mode selection (Sport/Normal/Eco).
In summary:
- ACC is a fancy cruise control which will accelerate and brake the car based on the distance of your car to the car in front (that you can set how far it is) and the maximum speed you have chosen. As you have DSG your car will stop completely in traffic if the car in front of you stops. If you then press resume (RES - Left of steering wheel buttons) your car will go again (I think - not sure - we have a manual car).
- Front assist and emergency braking will warn you and then put the brakes on if the car thinks you are about to hit something.
- Park assist helps you park the car. You activate it using the button on the right of the gearlever (one with P and a steering wheel icon on it). One press for parallel parking, second for 90 degree reverse) and then indicate to the side you want to park on. Do this BEFORE you go past the free spot and the car will measure.
- Driver fatigue - Will warn you if it thinks you're getting tired
- Collision thingy - Will close windows and sunroof, then crack windows open (to let airbag gases out) and pull the seat belts tight if it thinks you're about to have a crash.
- Eco/Normal/Sport: These change the behaviour of the throttle response/gearbox/AC and steering weight accordingly. Individual mode allows you to set each of those parameters differently.
Our sales person knew a fair bit, and so did I having done a fair bit of research beforehand. I'm not going to go into the reasons behind your purchase but my advice to you, based on my experience since getting the car is:
1. Read the manual
2. Read the manual again. Do one by one the systems till you understand the functions.
3. Start trying out the systems one by one in situations on the road where traffic allows:
For example:
- Try the Park Assist in a quiet car park or road for parallel parking
- Try the ACC on the road having set it at the highest distance and speed limit
Other Advice:
- The Front assist (emergency braking if you are about to hit something) is brutal so I don't recommend testing it. Turn it on, leave it on and believe me you will know when it works.
- Take your hands off the steering wheel when trying the auto parking as the movement of the steering wheel can be quite quick (and painful).
- Be patient. The cars have a lot of features that you will keep discovering as you drive it more.
- Read the manual....have I mentioned this before?
Hope this helps...
