yes, but unless you go with real racing (head to head like the V
, Timeattack track days are very safe and the number of cars on the track at any one time is limited. you hardly get into contact with other cars.
the general people perception of track days is mostly ugly, car trashing and breaking activities and prone to crash and write off... etc. basically for most people, cars that have been on track are dead cars. imo this is not right, well maintained cars (I changed my oil 8 times within 25,000km), always looked after, driven hard only when up to operating temp, should not fare worse than those driven on the twisties and only serviced once year.
in fact, in my opinion well managed track days with limited number of cars are probably THE BEST activity you can do in this country without killing any animals on the road (well insects still present) / without loosing your licence / without any unexpected third party suddenly crossing your lane. basically it is a controlled environment where you can go at your own pace.
the potential dangers are only created by exceeding your driving and car abilities or lack of common sense / experience / training.

I've driven at Sandown and Winton and you'd really have to pushing hard to come anywhere near a wall. Plenty of places where you can exceed the speed limit by a long way, which is getting back to the original comment about autobarns.
