I thought the 'sitting for 15m' point was more to look after the DSG. Then again, I have seen older folk shift from D to N in their older Falcodores when stopping for more than a minute.

In response to the running in of the motor. I'm going to drive it exactly the same way I have driven my GTI. The GTI used about 700 ML oil over 32000km and 3 years.

Just make sure the engine is WARM - ie at operating temperature. Just drive it normally and give it a bit of a squirt every day.

    No launch controls until 1000km.

As for the Golf R. It's a precision piece of german engineering. Only picked it up yesterday and am very impressed with the overall build quality and finish compared the the MK6 GTI.

Took it down to Stanwell tops and back through the national park last night. Corners very nicely and accelerates out of corners with heaps of grip.

Pity you can't really open up the throttle in this country. We need an autobahn type highway between here and melbourne / brisbane I reckon!!

Thats why I took mine out at powercruise around hidden valley raceway. Race mode on and ESC completely disabled. Lets just say it was the perfect way to learn how the car drives

Yes you can, take it to an open track day or join a car club that participates in track days. Even if we had an autobahn I wouldn't want to be sharing it with people who were testing their abilities in a new Golf R, recipe for carnage. $250 for a day at the track and it's WAY more fun than a straight stretch of highway.

I assume your insurer walks away from these track days?

Yeah, usually you're not covered but I'm not talking about head-to-head racing, just punting around a track within you and your car's limits - where appropriate. I've driven at Sandown and Winton and you'd really have to pushing hard to come anywhere near a wall. Plenty of places where you can exceed the speed limit by a long way, which is getting back to the original comment about autobarns.

You could come up to Brisbane for a holiday and attend one of our happy laps sessions for $35.

How did you find the car with ESC off? None of the reviews have really gone into any detail about the drive with ESC off, however I think it was Autocar that said it's still virtually impossible to get the R tail-happy even with the ESC off.
