Pretty sure it has already been approved. You can get that on any new Volvos as part of either the Drivers or Safety Pack that includes the City Traffic/Cross Traffic, Blind Spot Indicator, Lane Assist and all the other bells and whistles.
It is just an unfortunate case that VWA decides to skimp on another option.
I've used it in last year's Subaru Liberty and Outback. So it is VWA holding back options. Given the hardware seems present, it works in Audi's and OS VWs have it I wonder if VAGCOM could be used to activate it?

I haven't found a single window tinting place that said they can do it, even the VW dealer said they cant as it requires to much dash/window/electronics fiddling to make it feasible. I have seen two R's tinted, and you really cant notice the un-tinted quarter panel.
If you want a 'paint protection', i reccomend looking ANYWHERE other than the dealership, I have found prices for opti-coat range from $300-$600(max) and that's with a warranty. Otherwise get a good car detailer to apply a basic hydrophobic sealant for upto $100, and re-apply each year for best protection IMO.
Interior 'protection', in short, no. Clean it or have it cleaned semi-regularly with or without leather protecting agents and it will be fine.
Tinting, pay no more than $300, unless you know it to be of exceptional quality (ie not dealership)
Quick update on insurance if anyone is interested (all annuals quoted):
- NRMA (I've had roadside with them for 6 years now and prior car insurance was with them): $915
- AAMI (Current car insurer for 6 years): $1,250
- Allianz: $1,160
- Bingle: $1,550!!!
- Suncorp: $1,300
- youi: $789
All quotes are comprehensive on market value for 2 drivers (late 20's) listed, perfect driving history, and no extras (hired car, windscreen etc.), and youi's quote already includes hired car for a maximum of 14 days.
It's obviously worthwhile to shop around!!! Has anyone gotten anything better?
Thanks adam. I've found a place near where I live that does opti-coat (hand application for $400+ and spray-gun 2 coats fror $500+).
Tinting wise, I'm still unsure who to go with, what film/products to go for. There seems to be a lot more varieties out there with different tint shops promoting diff products.
Most tinting businesses are a "one man show"; a single shop with one type of tint, a 35% (darkest legal), a lighter than 35%, and two tints below 35%. I would suggest to stay away from these, as colour, type, and quality can be quite varied. I would suggest a larger business or chain, that offers many different tints colours and % gradients. I originally chose 'Instant windscreens & tinting', as they are a large chain, have an average price ($350), and had some 40 different tints, various prices for various quality, and good helpful advice/service. However I went with VW dealership (not the best choice quality wise), but for the convenience of having it done before delivery, and they offered a good price of $250 for a 20% (front) and 35% (sides and rear).
Per the insurance thread I'd suggest SA people grab a quote from SGIC. I put an R in on Thursday when doing my GTI quote and it came up around $570 - that's with no claim protection, two years new replace, $450 excess and mod friendly. Oh and choice of repairer.. critical for anyone considering one of the newer brands especially.
At the end of the day though everyone's going to get different quotes courtesy of all the variables.
