Notice how i said many of the R32's and R's are only for daily driving to work and back, not all.
Why bother buying a performance variant of the car (especially the hardcore sports variant with AWD and recaro's) if you are only going to be driving it to work and only use about 4/10's of it's potential?
Fact of the matter is people are buying the GTI and the R now as a status symbol rather than becasue it is the performance variant so VW is catering to that market.
People who are interested in status don't buy VW's. That's again a very ignorant statement. I have bought two GTI's because they have been a brilliant all round package. As Chris Harris says, "it's a car offering everything to all people, a classless performance car."
A GTI is not arrogant or ostentatious. An R might be bought by people wanting the safety of AWD and a bit more performance. Very few people outside of car ENTHUSIASTS would know what an R is, let alone a GTI. GTI's have sold very well here because of the overall quality of the package not because they want to go down Lygon St on a Sat night with some bull%*it acid dance music blaring out of open windows. Go buy an STi or Evo. If I'm interested in status alone I'd buy another European car, probably with 4 rings on the bonnet and pay $20,000 more for the same car.
The fact you drive a hotted up SUV with a voided warranty, big wheels, modified exhaust and countless other tasteless modifications when you should have just bought the Tiguan with the GTI engine and saved yourself thousands of dollars gives me the impression that you are the one who is more interested in status and less interested in making intelligent decisions. And I don't care for you being a forum moderator. Have some respect for the vast majority of people on this website.
