The standard screen in the A250 is the same size as the Golf. Option the standard sat nav and the screen size doesn't change.
2150 before OTR costs adds up to close to 2.5-3k.

You mentioned satnav on the Merc was 3k or something. That was the package upgrade which included the large screen and the upgraded audio you mentioned.

Plus the standard screen's not smaller that Discover satnav on the Mk7. The Becker satnav alone on the Merc isn't 3k. Radar assisted crash prevention braking is standard.

Notice how i said many of the R32's and R's are only for daily driving to work and back, not all.
Why bother buying a performance variant of the car (especially the hardcore sports variant with AWD and recaro's) if you are only going to be driving it to work and only use about 4/10's of it's potential?

Fact of the matter is people are buying the GTI and the R now as a status symbol rather than becasue it is the performance variant so VW is catering to that market.

People who are interested in status don't buy VW's. That's again a very ignorant statement. I have bought two GTI's because they have been a brilliant all round package. As Chris Harris says, "it's a car offering everything to all people, a classless performance car."
A GTI is not arrogant or ostentatious. An R might be bought by people wanting the safety of AWD and a bit more performance. Very few people outside of car ENTHUSIASTS would know what an R is, let alone a GTI. GTI's have sold very well here because of the overall quality of the package not because they want to go down Lygon St on a Sat night with some bull%*it acid dance music blaring out of open windows. Go buy an STi or Evo. If I'm interested in status alone I'd buy another European car, probably with 4 rings on the bonnet and pay $20,000 more for the same car.
The fact you drive a hotted up SUV with a voided warranty, big wheels, modified exhaust and countless other tasteless modifications when you should have just bought the Tiguan with the GTI engine and saved yourself thousands of dollars gives me the impression that you are the one who is more interested in status and less interested in making intelligent decisions. And I don't care for you being a forum moderator. Have some respect for the vast majority of people on this website.

Good point Marcotto. The least VW could do is offer manual as a no cost option on the PP. For those who might think that equals big rip-off, I reckon one might find that resale would be close or equal to what the DSG version would be, as it will be quite a rare and desirable config in the used car market.

The drive-away price is likely to be a bit less than the VW website states based on my past purchases ... about 1K extra for dealer delivery in the metro area with the larger dealer. Volkswagen is looking to be a price-maker in terms of setting prices for the GTI. Extra tech not available in other marques ... features such as Adaptive Dampers & DSG puts the GTI above standard & just below premium. A VW marketing exec once told that VW's will always be about 15% greater in price than your std Mazda/Ford hot-hatches. I do believe that the Golf 7 - R could be DSG only the way things are going. Later on ... Volkswagen dealers may take orders for Manual Trans PP - GTI's as a special order ... provided you'll willing to wait some time for delivery ... and probably not for any less than what the DSG versions costs. In this case ... why pay more for less.

I think that you've hit the nail on the head, the R is IN THE EYES OF VWA just a fancy party horse... We've asked them for a manual in the R range but the evaluation cars that they've ordered for photo shoots, spec development, homologation and the like are coming as DSGs for some reason... The A320 to take me back to Mel has FINALLY touched down!

Reviews are now coming through: I agree ... sticker price should have been lower with 18" wheels & Dynamic Chassis Control as options. The standard Manual Trans GTI is shaping up to be the one to have for driver involvement & value for money from what I'm gleaning from initial reviews of the Golf 7 GTI:

You can deny it all you want but the majority of VW's sports oriented sales are to regular joe's who drive it in peak hour traffic and raely utilise any of the vehicle's potential.
It is a status symbol to them as it is flashy and has sporty seats etc, the majority would not know what any of the additional options do or are used for.

Also, when i picked up the Tiguan it came with the GTI engine across all models.
I wanted it for the performance benefits of AWD and a tunable engine and i actually use these as an enthusiast on our monthly outings.
This is the rare times that we actually see any of the sports variants being utilised for what they are made to do by a bunch of enthusiasts.

You seem to have your knickers in a knot because VWAus have not created a car that meets your specific requirements at a price point you are happy to pay however they will still sell like hotcakes to average joe daily driver.

If the electronic XDL pseudo front diff is good enough for a Golf R, BMW or McClaren Supercar ... it must be good for the GTI. On the other hand ... Ferrari use an e-diff a'la PP - GTI. Here's another review someone prepared earlier at goauto.com.au:

I also find it disappointing that a manual won't be offered in the GTI PP. After all has others have said the GTI is bought and used as daily driver, by most buyers, while those of us who prefer manuals would more likely want to buy the GTI PP as it is the 'performance version'.

After all I would rather get more engine performance and bigger brakes etc, from the factory rather than having to go the stage 1 route and the associated warranty issues.

I think the extra power of the PP - GTI is so that it is not slower than the std GTI as the std GTI is lighter. The PP - GTI is 35kgs heavier than the equivalent std DSG GTI. I imagine this would affect performance in some way. For sure the PP - GTI would have stiffer springs in the front end - hence more understeer at public roadway speeds. The GTI - PP with DSG is pretty heavy at the front and perhaps a bit inert on initial turn-in into corners -v- std Man Trans GTI re: chassis balance & driver involvement. Like I said ... the std Man Trans 7 GTI is looking better by the day as it saves another 10-15kgs ditching the DSG box ... making it 45kgs lighter than the PP - GTI ... that's not including any extra kit std on the PP - GTI. Don't even get me started on the weight of the Golf 7 'R'.
