Question 2014 GTI Performance 'wheel hop'

    Hey guys,

I bought my car used about a month ago, and I've been loving it thus far, but I've been having issues with the something like wheel hop. I know that being heavy footed could be the cause of this and that FWD has its limits. I would totally understand wheel spin occurring at heavy acceleration but not 'wheel hop'. When the 'wheel hop' occurs, it is like the sound of someone shooting a machine gun right next to me, also when at night you can see the headlight beam jumping up and down due to how severe it is.

I have tried turning off traction control, and it did not seem to help all that much. I have also seen other videos of GTI's using launch control and have not yet come across anyone that has a severe issue such as mine. I feel like I might destroy an engine mount or something with how much the car 'hops'. I've already popped out the front radar sensor somehow; luckily it popped right back in.

I do still have new car warranty, and the car is not modified, I do plan on taking it to Volkswagen for a checkup but wanted to be sure that it wasn't an issue on my side or a common problem.

I'm also running Michelin Pilot Super Sports which still have a fair bit of rubber left.

Apologies if this is a double post, I had a looksie but couldn't find anyone with similar issues.

one way to massively reduce this is to fit stiff front sway bar, stiff rear springs, poly bushings, solid engine and gearbox mounts and stiff dampers.

basically to reduce weight transfer to the rears and keep both front wheels on the ground.

other than that, it is what it is for stock mk5/6/7 fwd gti

I haven't had almost any wheel hop issue in the Clubsport which is FWD and even stronger than standard GTI (but stiffer suspension), on the only occassion I noticed some, it was nowhere near as bad as you describe so it definitely feels like the GTI's softer suspension is what is allowing it to occur, as Nat suggested above. I 've read people in US and UK were praising this https://store.034motorsport.com/mqb-...-aluminum.html so you could start with that and see how it improves things?

@nat225 @ringo thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I had a feeling it might be the back squatting which was causing it but wasn't that sure. I guess this issue could be more present in 'older' cars, such as some bushings or engine mounts losing their original performance? I'm not sure how the previous owner drove the car so he could have been driving it harder than usual.

I've looked into the Dogbone mounts and have heard great things, but was always worried about warranty and if tightening the drive-train could potentially cause more wear/strain on other areas (not too sure on the mechanics).

I do plan on speaking to a Volkswagen service centre about it, but don't want to come out looking stupid.

It's a great car and I love it, great upgrade from an 118 TSI, but the wheel hop has really gotten to me.

The only issue with uprated engine mounts is the extra vibration in the cabin, you don't add any significant stress to the drive-train. That been said, the 034 is reported to be one of the smoothest out there as the aluminium insert is not pre-stressed like the typical rubber ones. I doubt you can do anything at an OEM level unless something is very worn in which case it'd be replaced by a stock one again.

Can't speak for the mk6 or 7, but this rarely happens with my stock Mk5 GTI. Only on full-bore take offs. Driven normally it just doesn't happen. Just wanted to clarify.

I get this with the 19 inch stock wheels, it's a very common issue with FWD.
Since then, I changed my wheels to 18 inch (More tyre meat and comfort) plus I use the dogbone mount insert to reduce engine vibration while transferring power to the wheel.
This doesn't eliminate the wheel hop completely, but sure does reduce it by miles.

Ah okay. Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind.
