    Yeah my 15 minutes of searching after posting indicated it's more of an issue on the higher spec'd engines though I have seen some reports of issues on the GTI's. As you note it appears to be more of an overseas problem, though there have definitely been some locally.

    I'm due to do some test drives soon, and have sat in both cars. The youtube videos I've watched from 'Winding Road' are good and the Golf looks and sounds nicer in those. The WRX with a premium interior is very nice too though. Seriously put off by the CVT and seen as I do 25,000+ a year I need something good on fuel and comfortable in traffic. Both have their merits but the Golf seems like much more of an all rounder.

    I won't be in the market for a few months, but if she's still up for grabs I might have a look. I'm keen on the Performance packaged version though

    Sat in a GTIP today and dissapointed to see noe push button start. Just feels a bit cheap and sucks because all the reviews I've seen (OS obviously) show the car having it. Picky, I know.

    But the R is meh.

    Very picky though, I have stop/start in our other car and could not have cared less whether the GTI came with it.. maybe it's a cheap omission, but recall that sit down otherwise and then go and sit in all the GTI's competitors and you'll quickly work out the definition of cheap vs refined.

    I know lol, just more of the novelty factor I guess haha. Other than that tinge of dissapointment, it was an exceptionally nice looking car. The colour suited the red pin stripe in the lights perfectly and the GTIP sits very nice and certainly stands out compared to the other golfs in the range. GTIP wheels are great as well. I'll go out on a limb here say I prefer the GTIP over the R from a looks perspective. The Rs are plain in comparison.

    I was going to agree with you; the R seems a little unresolved in some areas.. but then you expressed interest in the PP wheels and all bets are off.

    That comes across as more unresolved than the R - a car with benefits only on track stuck with those 19s. Not to mention the price gap to the R then closes up.. If you're already springing extra for the PP then I'd go the extra mile and take the R. But each to their own of course.

    lol if I got an R I'd ask for the GTI PP wheels! Each to their own. Unfortunately the $10K price difference is probably insurmountable for me at this point in time. If the Mrs didn't want a new car at the same time then I could do it no worries

    Admittedly if you need xenons or for some reason like the Santiagos (or, gulp, both) then the PP isn't a bad ride; my gut just says most buyers are picking one up not for those items but thinking they will be buying a quicker car - which they won't be unless they are planning track days in which case again the PP makes sense.

    Otherwise save the difference, buy a great set of 19s and a tune and you'll have a good looking weapon for less than a PP.

    As for the mrs issue - totally understood. I sorted half the issue out by bringing the car fleet back to one once I sell the GTI. Then the next step is selling her on the benefits of the next ride that I want^^^ err need.

    Ha! My Mrs just want's a CX-5. If she gets that I could roll up in a funny car and she wouldn't care lol.

    I'm planning on leasing the Golf as I have leased my last 2 cars and the way I manage everything it works out quite well for me. The difference in price per fortnight between the standard GTI and the GTI with PP is $4.95. Yes, four dollars and ninety-five cents. It's a no brainer. I do happen to like the wheels on the PP, and the seats in the PP appeal to me more as well. The diff and power bump are secondary but I would like to take my car to some track days. I also like the pin stripe running into the headlights haha. I've put in a quote request for the R because the lease manufacturers cost is listed as $50k ($45k for the GTI with PP after $3.5k dealer discount) so the $5k difference may again only be a small bump per fortnight. Then again it does all add up so $40 or so could break the R being a viable option.

    Money man. I need more.
