    Hi Dutch77,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I searched through the first 50 or so pages and I guess I gave up finding anything. I was under the impression that the pricing thread was just for the lower spec'ed golfs? Yeah I agree that the handling and performance isn't as good as the Golf R. However the 0-100 on the v40 is better than the GTI ( according to 'official stats') but year thats not a definition of performance. I think the interior on the v40 is much nicer as well, but once again thats subjective. The v40's automatic gearbox does suck.

    aj55,

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid? and what specs you got?

    cheers.

Oh, apologies, I figured it was there because I was involved in a fair bit of it a few months back. There is a post of the business end of my invoice around somewhere on here.

You are right, styling both interior and exterior is subjective so if the V40 appeals then it's worth considering.

If you're not shy of tweaking then the Mk6 R has loads of potential, while the new Mk7 tunes are due out shortly and pushing the GTI into the 200s at the flywheel. That will comfortably cover the performance equation in a straight line without stressing the engine or mentioning corners.

You can drive around the axle tramping when you get to know the car well. There is simply a limit to how much power can go through the front wheels. Chipping the GTI would just make it worse. Fine in a straight line but you can't get off the line and it will lose traction out if flow corners. I tried a free 6 hr APR flash in my Mk. 5 and it totally destroyed the amazing quality and refinement of the GTI as a package. I sure did have fun up in the Dandenongs for a few hours though! Ok for a track car but you don't buy a GTI for all out power. Those guys still buy old school WRX's.

Cannot disagree more having owned a mk5 stg 1 and mk6 stg 2+. Give it a bump to get the car moving, feather up to around half throttle, grab second gear, and gently apply more throttle while keeping an eye on the traction light. You learn about throttle control when you grow up with powerful cars in the dark ages... before traction control.

My problem is not that the front wheels lose traction, that's to be expected in FWD cars. It is the fact the wheels don't spin without the axle tramp.

Can't say I had any major issues in the SA VWW cruise last Sunday which featured a few sections of sharp, undulating, cambered and damp corners. I'm running the original 18s on OZ rims.

I was followed by a PP on stock 19s - pigdog - be interesting to see how he went if he reads this.
