My GTI has 4k on it now and has not used a drop!
Anyone else confirming this? I am looking to move on from my Polo GTI after only a year(which had an engine replacement for oil issues) and don't want to have to go through all of that again.
I took one for a second test drive and just as I was going out, a new GTI owner came in to get theirs topped up after 1000kms. While I want a gti, I couldn't deal with oil issues again and my brain is thinking wait and see how an R-Line is. I just don't want to risk it like I did with the polo.

The EA888 has been a reliable unit for a long time, ditto the wet DSG6 (or manual if you desire, unlike current Polo GTI).
If you want something that drives like the GTI and can spring for it, do so, if you're fine with the 103TSI or 110TDI performance then an R-Line version of these would be a smart looking buy. Some neat looking examples in the wheel thread with a bit of work too.

Octavia RS gets the same engine combo too - EA888 with wet DSG6 - which can come close to the cost of a R-line Golf or about 5K cheaper than a GTI.
Shame you can't get the R-line with Xenons any more too :\

But the DSG 162 RS is $4700 cheaper than the Tiguan 155 DSG
Problem is the Tig is mk6 based, complete with last generation version of that engine which is why it has the 155kw/280nm tune vs 162/350nm in the MQB Golf and Octavia. While you could say the jump in kW isn't that much its pretty hard to ignore the jump in torque.
Plus with Satnav (Std 5" in the GTI & 8" in the RS) & Xenons (Std on the RS) being optional extras its just not a apples to apples comparison, its in need of a facelift/spec update to bring it in line with its stablemates.

I'm guessing here but the reference might be to the 132TSI which is the same engine just in a lower state of tune - $36,390 RRP (+ ORC) v Octavia RS hatch $38,790 or wagon $40,140 v GTI $44,490.. although the Tiguan 155TSI is technically cheaper as well at $43,490.
Definitely not an apples comparison - the MQB vehicles are both more modern and come with more standard kit, although the Tiguans are now in heavy discount mode so very sharp deals can be had.
There is no doubt the Octavia RS is a great buy, particularly in wagon format if you need the room. I will definitely be considering it next time around as a replacement for the mrs' car, but I'm still happy with my GTI.
