Is paint protection really necessary? I thought it was all snake oil stuff. But I managed to get the dealer to do one up with ceramic coating stuff free for me

The usual stuff from the dealers generally is; higher end options like Opticoat and Nanolex do provide benefits.

I've had Opticoat done to multiple vehicles and notice the difference.

I got mine coated with CQuartz, the water beads really easily now and it really brings out the shine! Lasts a couple of years so I think it's worth it. I honestly would ask a professional detailer to do it rather than let the dealer handle it.

I had opticoat applied to mine the day after delivery. Locks in the shine, makes washing easier and last for 5+ years

On their website (Opti-Coat) it says "it provides permanent protection for all modern factory paints", that sounds good, approx how much did it cost to have it applied to your car?
Ordered - Audi S3 Sedan in Sepang Blue (BW 29)

Every dealer is different but as a guide around $400 should cover it usually.

Good places will do some paint correction for you prior to applying the Opti-coat, and I usually get the wheels done as well - particularly with the brake dust of the Golfs it makes it a breeze to clean.

Sounds a reasonable price, not like paint protection offered by car dealerships which they charge around $1500 to $2000.

I had paint, wheels face, interior and glass done $875. Included minor paint correction.
