Yes, I was running a 2013 Polo 6r GTI here until I traded it recently for my new Golf and had the "98" challenge, as this was the VW recommended minimum for that car.

If i am not mistaken the base octane in Europe is 95RON.

Interesting fact.. bp ultimate in UK is 97RON, and ESSO (mobil) tops out at 97 also

Like most European vehicles designed to run on unleaded fuel, 95 is the minimum RON the engine can safely run on without damage.

To get the most out the engine, some manufacturers will recommend using unleaded fuel with a RON of 98.

That is the minimum RON which the manufacturer states the engine can safely run on without damage.

The salesperson will have their own reasons why they told the customer to use 95.

That can only be correct if the label on the fuel flap explicitly states that the vehicle requires a minimum of 98 RON, and if this was indeed the case, then the label for Volkswagen Group vehicles would read something like:

    min. 98 RON/ROZ

If the marketing literature is implying that a Mk7 Golf GTI requires petrol with a minimum RON of 98, and the vehicle doesn't have a fuel label as per above, then the brochure is incorrect.

Barring any manufacturer defects or faults, nearly all European vehicles designed for unleaded fuel will safely run on petrol with a RON of 95 without damage or harm.

However, some manufacturers recommend using 98 RON to achieve full power, hence the following label for Volkswagen Group vehicles:

    98/(95) RON/ROZ

Just so everyone is clear on this: Research octane number (RON) [English] = Research-Oktanzahl (ROZ) [German]

If the manufacturer (as opposed to the dealer) specifies a recommended RON, then that's what I would use.

    That is correct.

EN 228 (European standard for petrol) specifies a minimum RON and MON of 95 and 85 respectively.

The regulation and availability of unleaded petrol with a RON and MON beyond that specified in EN 228 largely remains up to each member state, within all the other parameters laid out in EN 228, of course.

Re 95 vs 98. Thanks for the input everyone. I've just got through to the VW service dept where I bought the car who have confirmed 95 minimum, but 98 is recommended. Now I should let the sales lady know..

I saw my first mk7 gti on the road today and I've got to say it looks very bland. I wish they would follow the trend of the mk5 and make the gti stand out a bit more. I still own a mk5 because the subsequent models looked dull in comparison.
A gti is never bought to be a head turner on the street. I liked the understated looks that never drew attention.
But regretfully this mk7 looks so understated as to look like all the other cars out there.

It landed in Melbourne on 12 Feb. It's on its way to Sydney now.
