Unless something goes horribly wrong you'll almost always spend more money on the extended warranty compared to what you claim back. I've claimed a few things and am barely half way through what I've already spent.

That said you buy a car expecting it to last beyond the warranty and what does go wrong is maintenance and shouldn't cost you the price of your car. I wouldn't get it personally.

As does everyone, but the reality is, owning a European car means that you should prepare yourself (mentally, at least) when something goes wrong.

It appears that the price of VW's extended warranty (underwritten by Allianz Insurance) has gone up a lot since the last time I've looked, so definitely not as good value this time 'round, and harder to recommend.

I'm guessing Allianz got "wise" when they looked at the amount of warranty claims being filed and realised how much it was costing them, probably, lol.

ihawk: Getting (or not getting) an extended warranty for your car is pretty much a question about mid term risk management for the purchase of the vehicle. I decided not to get extended waranty when I purchased my Golf (mid last year).

From an engineering perspective, the graph for the likelhood of a manufacturing fault over time has a classic "U" shape; That is to say, there is a high probability of a fault during the inital period after purchase, followed by a low probability during the mid term period, and finally a high probability of a fault as the useful life of the item is approached. It seems to me that an extended warranty targets the mid term period of the life of the car, so I reckon that the insurer has the advantage in the bet that the car will/will-not fail (which ought to be-but often isn't, reflected in the cost of the premium).

Instead of paying the extra money for an extended warranty, I decided to "self-insure". I did this by simply putting aside the premium that the dealer wanted into a separate bank account which earns interest. There is only one rule for my sef-insurance account. That rule is that I can only withdraw money from this account after the VW warranty period has expired and only if I need to fix the car. My hope (and my expectation) is that I will be financially better off using this approach. Of course, I won't know if my strategy has been successful until after the notional extended warranty period has expired, but I'm willing to take this risk. Any money remaining in my self insurance account after the extended warranty period has expired is mine!

You should wait: my neighbour has a white one and it invariably looks dirty whereas the dirt on my silver car parked next to it is difficult to see.

As they say, if you settle for second best, that is generally what you get. May 2014 will be here before you know it and you will have the pleasure of the colour you choose for a long while well after that I presume.

My 3 previous golfs were all silver ( MK1 GLS, MK4 2.0 Generation, MK6 GTI) and yes they hide road grime and light dirt better than most colours but white is the next best colour. The darker the colour the worse it is. I usually wash a car every 2-3 weeks depending on how dirty it is. I owner a Black Holden Adventra Wagon for 5 years and it looked good the day I washed it but after that it looked like ****. Spent more time cleaning it than driving it I reckon.

As the car we got loaned to us to cover us until the new car arrives , does have to be returned shortly, so May is out of the question , 3 months with out a car just wont happen. If it was a week or 2 then I could put up with that much pain for the gain but not 3 months unfortunately.

Any thoughts on extended warranty?

I've been looking at the options via a broker for my 2011 118TSI. News is not good.

In August 2011 the dealer wanted $1500 for a 3 year policy (Allianz), and now they want $3500 for a 2 year policy (Allianz). I've decided not to buy extended warranty insurance and cross my fingers for 6 months. Factory warranty expires end of June 2014 and I expect to be in a new GTI December 2014.

I was told there are some Performance Packs on the same ship that my Standard GTI is coming on according to the manifest the VW sales manager had on his laptop at my local dealer. Arrival date to Fremantle is mid to late February.
