Mk7 Golf GTI Discussion Thread

Seems strange that on the base model mk7 VW dropped the price $3000 over the mk6 but on the GTI they raised it $1000. They quote me $22990 drive-away for the base model and $46500 for the GTI. I haven't driven the mk7 GTI yet but the mk6 GTI certainly wasn't twice the car of my base model. I reckon they've got them priced at least $10K too much and that is now reflected in the very low trade ins being given on 3 year old mk6 GTI's. Only fan-boys who must have the very latest thing all the time would inflict financial losses like that on themselves.

They gave me a good deal. So some dealers are willing to move on the price.

A $1000 increase isn't too bad when you compare apples and apples. Most people including myself added 18 inch wheels to their Mk 6 GTI at about $1200. So using this as a starting point and things look better. Add the standard inclusions that were options and you are a long way ahead.

I was lucky to get a good deal on the first of the stocks, but I hear most dealers are holding their ground. From what I hear there are only a few cars still available from initial delivery with another small batch coming in November, then no more until next year. So I guess with only a few cars available at this stage it will keep the prices up.

Also a factor could be the fact that they can't offer anything much different to rrp until the 15th (according to someone a few pages back)

Does anyone know the corporate pricing yet. It was hinted to me that it's $1,800 less which isn't much, I thought it was meant to be of the order of 10%

I don't know what you're on about with low trade ins. It doesn't matter what car you've got, dealers are going to give you a **** trade in. Of you don't want to be shafted on price then put the effort in and sell it privately.

By the way, the Golf GTI (and Golfs generally) have a comparably high value retention.

Also, if you're comparing a base model Golf witj a GTI then you have entirely missed the point and by buying the base model, you've made the right choice.

I would imagine that a Golf 7 GTI from Mexico would be cheaper than the same from Germany. You may have to compromise on quality, but that would not always be the case. You'd know if your GTI had come from Mexico, as apparently they will come with 2-stage (possibly Monroe rather than Sachs) adaptive dampers. For more info ... read on:

The PP GTI DSG would be comparable to price to the Audi Quattro 1.8T AWD with alloy from suspension parts, alloy bonnet & alloy front guards to aid dynamics.

I think its clever marketing on vw's behalf. You cant just walk out with all the options for close to base price like other brands (subaru, focus st etc). Being firmer on price is one of the reasons they hold their value so well. Have a look on carsales at the mk gti's, try and and find one with low km's, dsg, leather, sunroof, bi-xenons, acc and rns. They either dont exist or their at the top of the price range.

I test drove the mk7 gti today for the 1st time. It's left me with mixed emotions. Aesthetically, I was quite disappointed. I was expecting the car to look quite impressive in the flesh, but it wasn't. It doesn't look much different to the standard golf from the outside: quite bland & conservative, even for a VW. I think the mk6 gti looks better. The interior is nothing special. Sure, it's a notch up from the usual Japanese brands in the same segment, but the fake carbon fibre plastics was pretty cheap looking.
In terms of driving, I was a bit more impressed. Negligible turbo lag, the engine is very responsive. But the engine is a bit whiny in sound. I prefer the sound of the mk6 gti or the R. The ride is definitely more compliant than the mk 6 gti. It's still a very agile car. But at times the car felt a bit too light - not as well planted as an R or a quattro. I loved the chassis control settings - particularly individual setting where you can literally alter the engine, steering & suspension settings. That was very impressive.
There's not a lot of stock available to dealers so I don't think there's a lot of room for negotiation at the moment.
Anyways, that's my 2c!

As a Mark V driver I had the same view, a fortiori, about Mark VI. So having waited a bit, I am pretty happy with what the Mark VII offers over the Mark V and VI, not least in torque and extra space with lower weight and imrpoved fuel economy. Pretty impressive in my book.

Totally agree. I don't like the new wheel - middle is too chunky and trying too hard to look more Audi-esque. Engine is sweet but as it is the same EA113 with ko3 (I believe) then it can't be vastly different to the mk6 as I discovered. Looks similar to the mk6, but I like certain bits in the 6 better like the front end with the double stripes and the detroit wheels look tougher than the Austin ones. The trademark DSG fart is also less rorty, which may suit some but a bit pussy cat for me (mine may be somewhat exaggerated with the K&N filter though).


If I didn't already have a gti I would be sold, but With a mk6 I will save and wait for the mk8. Be keen to see what the new R is like though.....
