I think al already did. And IMHO he got a pretty good deal with what came standard in the car and would lose less in depreciation when the time comes to sell the car vs someone who has had to option the VW up to similar specs.

You missed out LED tail lights on the Merc as standard, a nice (not quite leather but looks as good) faux leather interior with red stitching, a 7 speed DSG, bixenon as standard. A IMO more stylish interior as standard. Reverse camera is also RVC+ equivalent (which is not available in the Mk7).

ps isn't the ICE screen the same size (5.8") as the one in the GTI?

Just to give an indication of how keenly priced the A250 is, you just have to hear what their competitors are saying:

And who is going to buy an A250 that doesn't offer a manual option, a LSD option and forces people to accept paying for a sunroof they may not want and offers a small ICE screen as standard?

And it's highway robbery the options prices on a GTI, yet ok to spend $3000 for sat nav and stereo upgrade on the A250 or $2500 for leather. So a fully optioned A250 is 55K + ORC. A fully optioned GTI DSG is $51500 + ORC.
125i BMW in a manual with a few options is drive-away for me with my corp discount less than $50K plus other benefits. Its RWD!, faster and handles better than the GTI so a no brainer really. And as a bonus has better image than a VW!

The amount of R32's and R's i see being driven to work that never see track time goes to show that most buyers are not enthusiasts, rather just after a fancy euro hatch
As an enthusiast who doesn't take their car onto a race track, I disagree with that comment.

I am not sure what the prices are for the options on the A250 but last I recall, there were bundles/packs.

The SatNav upgrade includes A LARGER screen plus an upgraded stereo system. On the Mk6, that was a 3.5k upgrade IIRC and didn't even come with a bigger screen.

The leather package included stitching on the dashboard as well which is something Porsches and Ferraris do.. think it adds a nice ambience to the interior tho I thought the standard micro fibre/faux leather was also already a nice touch. Plus other stuff like tilting passenger side mirror on reverse and also memory electric motorized seats.

I assume by "image" you don't mean taking a photo of the front of it

Just joking (couldn't resist) - congrats on the purchase. Hope to see some pics/vids.

$3150 for "Vienna" leather in the Golf.
I remember my early Mk 5 GTI had leather (or an equivalent man made material looking like leather on the sides of the seats). My dad's late Mk 5 Golf had cloth on the sides of the seats and most definitely vinyl on the back of the seats. Cost cutting
My Mk 6 has cloth on the sides and again likely imitation leather on the back.
Why the hell are we being asked to pay 3 grand for "some leather"
Well at least you get seat heaters.
In the Merc the standard seats are very nice man made suede. Look very cool and are very comfy. Option up the AMG Exclusive package for $2490 and you get very tasty red cut perforated black leather seats also with red stitching that's shames the VW partial leather. You also get 3 memory electric adjustment included with heating and upper dash covered in man made leather with red stitching that again looks brilliant.
Also in the Merc if you don't "want" a sunroof then don't open the thing and leave the sun shade closed. By the way the panoramic sunroof really is that and much better than in the Golf. So why would you complain about a "free" sunroof? Particularly when it looks much better at trade in time.
For the golf to not get LED tail lights after spending about 3 grand for bixenons is ridiculous. They should not be the same as what I paid for them 3 years ago. Oooooooo maybe I'll tick the option of an LED number plate globe
Yes unfortunately the A250 doesn't come in manual or have adjustable suspension but it does have a 3 pointed star badge on the front that says best in class depreciation rate. The VW has come a long way from being the "people's car"

Does anyone know where the Aussie GTI will be made ?

Are there any options for a larger screen audio unit or Dynaudio ?

Perhaps ask them why they did not put in safety equipment, such as Driver Assist which benefits everyone, including those outside the car, and cannot be retrofitted and leave out SatNav which people can add to their iPhone for $20 or add separately for $200, or retrofit as desired.

This would have allowed VWA to have a starting price of $39,990 and be enjoying a much more enthusiastic response from the GTI fan base on the value proposition as against the competing Mercs, Bimmers and Focus etc.

Our Golfs are from Germany (and Mk7 Golf Wagon will be from Germany too). Neither Dynaudio nor Discover Nav Pro (8" screen) are on the options list.

That's exactly what they've been telling us, no-one wants to buy manuals in today's day and age. Oh and the R will almost certainly be 5 door, DSG only... We are a minority, not "normal" people... Heading back to Mel now...
