Good luck VW, you'll need it! Mercedes, BMW, Audi have better offerings at more competitive pricing.

Majority of the GTI's on the road are stock standard cars with no extras, why not have a poverty pack version as well.

Dare I say the upcoming new WRX might be better bang for buck closer to the low 40's for AWD and 200kw/400nm...(plus auto option for 1st time)

hmmm, the 125i hatch (2l turbo) only came out in F20. price pretty consistent, except for a recent price rise. The S3 is just market positioning with the release of the A45 and the M135i.

    Things just got awkward/interesting!

Audi launches two new A3 Sportback variants - motoring.com.au

The 1.8 TFSI quattro model is priced at $45,500 and is trimmed to the Ambition level. It introduces all-wheel drive to the new A3 Sportback range, embracing an oil pump-driven clutch system for drive to the rear wheels. Effectively an on-demand system, the quattro final drive ensures optimal traction and grip even when the engine is producing its full output – 132kW and 280Nm. The 1.8-litre engine is the third-generation of EA888 four-cylinder, introducing thin-walled cylinders, integrated exhaust manifold, new crankshaft, new balancer shafts and a plastic sump to knock 8kg off the weight of the engine.
Acceleration (0-100km/h) takes just 6.8 seconds and the fuel consumption is rated at 6.6L/100km.
So you can get an A3 with Quattro and a 0-100 very close to the GTI for almost the same price, granted you'll need to tick some boxes to get an S-line bodykit, but it def should be on peoples shopping list!

    That is interesting.

AFAIK Audi Australia is not overseen by VWA as they do with Skoda, so maybe a bit of competition going on here.

Looks interesting (good for snow trips). But its A250 priced (though not completely comparable) when you spec S Line and the sat nav etc.

Yeah its not directly comparable to the GTI, so would need to weight up the handling benefits of the Quattro vs less features and no standard sports bodykit.

Worth noting that the DSG is standard on the A3, with manual a No Cost Option

    And so is leather

So now (i think) you can get a 90kw A3, 103kw COD A3, 132 kw FWD and AWD A3 and the S3. So Audi has something (COD or 1.8L and AWD) that the Golf doesn't have. Clever

I forgot about the diesel but for some reason their popularity seems to be dropping.

Also of note is an email I got from VWA today, stating that there will be no manual option in the GTD or GTI. DSG only!

BTW, this is my first post, just joined the forum. Looks like a great place.

    Cheers,
    Jake (of Newcastle)
