Thanks Dutch and Ralfi. Yes, $52k is pushing it for a GTI on my budget, regardless of spec. R is just that bit too much for my budget, too. Of late I'm thinking maybe a 2nd hand manual R in a year or two. Hopefully in the $30s by then? At the moment I'm happy to hold out for the prospect of xenons on a base GTI at some stage. We'll see how long that lasts!
On the other hand, I still have a soft spot for Alfas, having driven and been impressed by the base Giulietta. I can get xenons, leather and manual in the 1.4 multi-air turbo for mid-high $30s. Similar performance and economy to the Golf highline (fine for my needs), but a port injected engine, so no carbon build-up issues (as per the DI VWs). I may even jump that way.
