Thread: Mk7 Golf GTI Discussion Thread

  1. #1791

    Hi all,
new forum user here and I've pretty much read through all 179 pages of this thread in the last few weeks.

I'm in the market for a new MK7 DSG GTI at the moment. It will be my first ever VW. I've always liked the look of the GTI's over the last few years and with this version winning COTY, I thought it might be a good time to jump in and get one.

For anyone that has recently bought one, did you find that dealerships were unwilling to budge far from RRP? I keep getting told that supply is pretty constrained at the moment so it might just be a simple supply / demand problem and the dealerships are the ones in a position of power.

The last sales person I spoke to said that it might be possible to discount < 2% from RRP. From past experience purchasing cars I thought a discount of 4-5% was reasonable. I've seen people post about some pretty obscene discounts they have got, and I believe that they got that discount but I think they are more the exception than the rule.

I'm unsure on the dealer situation in Perth, and the costs of getting a car over there, but don't be afraid of at least looking into what interstate dealers are willing to do if the locals won't budge on RRP or only move a little.

While supply on the 7s is far from perfect and there are waits, it is still improved over the 6 and there is a lot more market competition these days so a dealer keen on the sale should still be willing to move more than a couple per cent.

Anyone with an 8%+ discount almost certainly has corporate plus pricing through their employer (which accounts for maybe 5% of the 8%).

Welcome to the forums mate. You can't go wrong with the GTI, it's such a brilliant car. As for the price, most dealers won't budge too much as they are selling faster than they can get them in at the moment. Just make sure if you get a drive-away quote that you don't get ripped off on the Dealer Delivery charges. All that is basically a wash and a mechanic to check it over. Shouldn't cost VW more than $100 so don't let them try to charge you something stupid like $2,000+. It's basically pure profit for the dealer. This is where you'll get most of your discount.

Good luck and hope you get it!

    Thanks Dutch77, Jimi & Lemonskin.

Apparently the discounts on this side of the country aren't as big as elsewhere. Probably due to the smaller number of dealers. I'll investigate the option of getting it in from interstate (I've never done that before).

At least I'm more sure that supply is a problem at this stage and I can set my pricing expectations accordingly. Hopefully it wont be too much longer before I get one of these hot hatches in my hands.

Went to my dealer yesterday for another test drive. Saw a truck unloading and yes my vehicle got there just minutes before me. Mk7 Golf GTI Discussion Thread-img-20140416-00005-jpg

V similar to mine, but I have the manual, hence no performance pack. Still a week or two to go; can't wait
