LSD... if you have driven on a race track, you will notice the big difference between open diff vs LSD.
On public roads, you would be breaking the law before findng the difference.

It's inclusive of the bixenons so it's really only about $2000~. The extra BHP is just to compensate for the added weight so it's only just a bit faster on paper but not that noticeable. You get bigger brakes as well. I think it's worth the money for the LSD if you really want one, but I guess you have to push it a bit to see it's effects?
I'd suggest that you may notice some improvement in power-down and balance out of low-speed hairpins and tight constant-radius corners with the tricky diff, and you wouldn't need to be driving at illegal speeds or in a track-like manner to appreciate this. But you would need to be pushing on fairly hard, and you'd want to be doing that sort of driving on those sorts of roads sufficiently frequently to make the benefits of the diff (in conjunction with the PP's extra fruit) worth the outlay.
^ This.. I've read enough reviews to know that traction in some corners can be an issue, but it's not a $4k issue for me. I don't need the xenons (and prefer the red strip staying in the grille only) and don't really want 19s - especially the PP's design. Ergo I've ended up with a base model of something for the first time in over a decade.
Dutch, have to agree. Bixenons were not a huge game changer for me; I am also looking forward to the manual (which will suit my needs better), so foregoing both the PP and the R gets me a car sooner and saves up for the 98 Octane to tip into it (but I really envy anyone with a 50K+ budget to spend on one of these beauties....)
Good stuff. I don't think my car will ever see a track, or if it does, it'd only be once or twice. I actually like the Xenons but I wasn't gonna fork over $2k for them.
Anyone heard anymore about the possibility of the 3dr coming to Aus?
I asked at a Brisbane dealer a few weeks ago; not happening for economic reasons (ie not enough market demand...). Personally I find this a little hard to swallow because not everyone interested in the GTI necessarily wants to shove the 2.5 kids and dog in the back seat and the groceries and ironing in the boot.....
