    I came across some some photos of the GTI with the adaptive cruise control. There is a big sensor in the middle of the front bumper grill.Don't like the look at all!

    How else is it supposed to work out what the other cars are doing to be adaptive?
    It is on all cars with ACC (even porsche and you can see the little receiver)

    Lol, it's not that big. Lucky you don't see it while your driving then.

    I test drove both cars and brought the GTI kind of sums my thoughts right there. I know the Audi salesman so took it for a really good test drive it didn't feel anywhere near as quick as the VW even when we tested the launch control. Really nice car more up market but less sporty I felt. Oh and careful of the options book you can easily spend over $25k on extras without trying too hard..

    I know it has to be there and I know it's there but I couldn't see one in person because no dealer I went to had one for me to look at.
    It just stands out too much with the honeycomb grill of the gti, just looks weird.
    It actually blends in and looks good with the grill of the normal golf.

    Anyway I am happy I am getting it but all I am saying is that it looks weird with the grill design of the gti.

    Which Audi model are you referring too?

    A3, yes, not really a performance hatch, and yes, plenty of options you can tick which sends the cost sky high.

    S3, that thing is bloody quick, much more responsive than the GTI (test drove all - GTI, A3 and S3 in manual and DSG), and there isn't much on the options list apart from S Performance pack, driver assist package.

    He was probably referring to the Audi A3 Quattro, which does have a similar 0-100 ( 6.8 ). Getting a S-line version might help it feel more sporty.

    A3 1.8 Quattro or Mk 7 GTi

    Yes, he was referring to the A3 1.8 Quattro. It was a response to my earlier post, which has been moved from the Mk6 forum to this one.

    Below is my earlier post, to save everyone having to go back and look for it. Would appreciate any thoughts / comments.

    A friend is considering getting the A3 1.8 quattro. Since I have a Mk6 GTi, he asked for my comments on whether he should get the Mk7 GTi instead. They are very similarly priced.

    I haven’t driven the Mk7 GTi or the A3, so my recommendation to him was only based on my experience with the Mk6 GTi.

    I told him if he likes to fully utilise the engine in low gears (in terms of acceleration), then he should probably get the A3 1.8 quattro.

    I really like my Mk6 GTi, and wouldn't consider replacing it any time soon, but there has been one major frustration – I can’t fully utilise the engine in low gears, especially in the wet. The axle tramp is so bad it feels like the engine is going to thump itself loose from the subframe.

    Yes, I know I can feather the throttle to the point of maximum traction and not exceed that point, but it takes a bit of time to find that limit and there is no way I can get close to the 6.9s claimed figure for the 0-100km/h.

    The A3 1.8 quattro claims 6.8s for 0-100km/h, and my guess is that it can achieve that day in day out, with minimal fuss. As opposed to sitting on a jack hammer and being half a second slower.

    Would appreciate your comments please, especially from people who own or have driven the Mk6 GTi / Mk7 GTi / A3 1.8 quattro.

    By the way, I owned a manual Mk5 TDi a few years ago. The front tyres broke traction even more easily than the Mk6 GTi - 320Nm (Mk5 TDi) vs 280Nm (Mk6 GTi), but there was no axle tramp whatsoever. The tyres just spun smoothly, no thumping at all. Not sure what is the reason for the difference?

    I drove the Mk6 Golf R and the Scirocco R both with the same engine and transmission. The difference is really the Quattro/4Motion drivetrain on the R.

    I'd say the Golf R feels more lethargic off the line and not as zippy. In day to day use without exceeding the limits of traction, I'd agree the Scirocco is a more fun/usable car.

    I expect that's the major difference of the A3 Quattro vs the GTI. Other variables include tuning of response for a regular hatch vs a hot hatch like the GTI including suspension changes.

    Did you experience any axle tramp with the Scirocco R under WOT from stand still? Or did the tyres spin smoothly when breaking traction? That's my only complaint with the Mk6 GTI. It's so severe that my windscreen phone holder falls off every time.
