Mk7 Golf DSG Gearbox Issues, Questions and Discussion

Can't say I've experienced anything odd about 1 -> 2 changes on mine, but I'll admit I have not spent much time in manual mode (mostly on highways at higher speeds to vary revs on run in).

But I am guessing Adam is referencing me and I should definitely be at the VWW cruise on Sunday to talk more if you can make it out.

Automatic transmission malfunction
 Please first read and note the introductory information and heed the WARNINGS Emergency shift program
If all selector lever position indicators in the instrument cluster display are highlighted against a bright background, there is a system malfunction. The automatic transmission or the DSG® automated transmission will then operate in the emergency shift program. The emergency shift program lets you drive the vehicle, but at a reduced speed and without being able to use all of the forward gears.
In some cases, vehicles with a DSG transmission may not be able to shift into reverse. It is then impossible to drive the vehicle backwards.
In any event, have the automatic transmission checked by an authorized Vo kswagen dealer or authorized Vo kswagen Service Facility.
Overheating of the DSG® automated transmission
The DSG transmission may overheat, for example, due to frequent starts, extended “creeping,” or stop-and-go traffic. Overheating is indicated by the warning light  and, if applicable, by a text message in the instrument cluster. An additional warning chime may sound. Stop and let the
transmission cool down ⇒ .
The vehicle does not move forward or in reverse even though a drive position is selected
with the selector lever
If the vehicle does not move in the desired direction, the system may not have engaged the drive position correctly. Press the brake pedal and select the drive position again.
If the vehicle still does not move in the desired direction, there is a system malfunction. See your authorized Vo kswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance to have the system checked.



 As soon as you get any of these warnings about transmission overheating, you must either park the vehicle in a safe place or drive faster than 12 mph (20 km/h).
 If the text message and acoustic warning repeat themselves every 10 seconds or so, you must park the vehicle in a safe place as soon as you can safely do so and stop the engine. Let the transmission cool down.
 To help prevent damage to the transmission, do not drive the vehicle again until the acoustic warning has stopped. As long as the engine is overheated, avoid stop and start driving and avoid low speeds (“walking pace”).

This is old news. Yes, it's in a Golf 7 manual on page 185.

Emergency programme
There is a fault in the system if all the displays on
the instrument cluster for the selector lever positions
have a light background. The automatic gearbox
is running in an emergency programme. The
vehicle can still be driven in the emergency programme,
but only at reduced speed and not in all
gears.
In vehicles with a dual clutch gearbox DSG®, you
may no longer be able to select reverse gear.
In all cases the automatic gearbox should be
checked by a qualified workshop immediately.
Overheating of the dual clutch gearbox
DSG®
The dual clutch gearbox can overheat when the
vehicle pulls off regularly, travels at a crawl for long
periods, or in stop and go traffic. Gearbox overheating
is indicated by the warning lamp 0 and in
some cases by a text message on the instrument
cluster display. A signal tone may also be given.
Stop the vehicle and allow the gearbox to cool
down.

When was the first time this was identified .Was it in the golf 6 owner manual or was it only recently added after all the DSG issues .
My read of this is that VW effectively states that the DSG is not suitable for continual use in high temp cities with heavy traffic conditions .
Anyone want to add to this .

Plenty of cars out there have protection modes for various things, particularly where electric motors and solenoids are involved. Nothing new at all.

I think you'd have to be giving the DSG a pretty hard time before it'd go into a safe mapping.

This stuff has been in the owner's manual for years (and yes, in the Mk6 and likely Mk5 manuals too). It's essentially describing what the gearbox will do if it overheats, and what you can do. It's not saying it will happen, or that it's even remotely likely - it's there in case of that eventuality. Standard owner's manual practise.

Don't read anything into this ref the gearbox being unable to handle heavy traffic in hot cities, because that's rubbish. We've got DSG-equipped Skoda Octavia taxis here in Adelaide, and it's certainly one of the hottest cities in Australia.
