Type R looks try-harder than Subie (if that's possible) to suffer front axle tramp every time your right ankle flexes in 1st or 2nd. GTI in same stable from same dealers as the R. Not sure where to go for less. Possibly Stinger if you've got no brand loyalty whatsoever and willing to drive like your Nan in the wet.
Each to their own, but in the end it's still a Golf and not some rare car that I would be happy paying full asking price.
To me, Golf R only makes sense at mid $50k max.

So what would you buy for $50k ? Or should I ask, what would you spend your $60k on? Just curious.
    Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD
Previous - Mk 6 R manual; Mk 7 R manual; Passat 130 TDi Wagon. Mk 7.5 Wolfsburg Wagon.

I have to agree with above, as nice as it was to get my R for 55k back in 2014 if I had to pay 60k for 7.5 now I still think it's good value compared to rivals.

I still think if you want few months after initial release mid 50s will again be possible.

I don't really see anything that stands out better than the R at 60k.

I've looked at m140i and great engine and build quality but I prefer the R in almost every other area. Plus good luck getting it for less than 65-70k.

S3 again is nice and I prefer in sedan for sure. (We're picking up one in few days) but unless it's leased good luck buying one for under 70k once you add few options.

I think R better than focus RS, Megane etc.

For me the next level up would be the rs3, m2 a45 category and they're all closer to 100k.

Bang for buck might be either wrx for about 40k or gti for around 45. Not sure on exact prices but if you're looking at the R you're prob comparing to STI, megane, focus RS, m140i and all similar price.

For a little bit more than $60k I would rather get the S3 sedan.
My brother got his for low $60k brand new and it came with a few options as well including magnetic suspension and 19 inch alloys. Other stuff people seem to add like matrix lighting and all that I could happily live without.

Was that a Facelift model or run out of the My16 model? If that's a FL model that's insane price. I'm on Audi forums a bit and most prices seem to be around 70k for S3 sedan with PP and few options. I'd guess that maybe mid 60's possible with good negotiation and no performance pack.

I know we paid mid 50's for mk7R and mid 60's for s3 sedan 2 years ago. We just picked up new S3 sedan yesterday FL model is massive improvement over previous one and through leasing company this time was only $30 more a f/t over 3 year lease. To me that is no brainer. The S3 IMO and I have both is miles ahead in terms of features, interior build quality. You feel like you're in a luxury 100k+ car.

I would personally get 7.5 over M140I as I find it better in most ways except engine/exhaust note but clear winner to be is the S3 sedan.

What ever car you decide it's going to be a Win all are great cars. Just pick one that you like the most and try for best deal and go for it!

The cheapest facelift S3 sedan on carsales is $68,872 drive away. It's got 5,500 kms on it and who knows how many times it is been launched on test drives. $60k is Wolfsburg wagon at cost price.

If you can lease then price I got FL S3 sedan was 57k and could get m140i same price. Pretty awesome considering both were about 75+k full RRP with few options.

The MK7R was 54k so very minimal discount by VW compared to Audi or BMW.

There is no way I could see anyone getting FL S3 privately under 65k.

For me I'd need to get 7.5 for 55-57 to choose it over the S3 sedan. At 10k price difference I'd choose 7.5R but 5k or less I'd select S3 sedan every single time!

I put down a deposit last month on 7.5 R Wolfsburg wagon and was hoping for an August delivery. I just got a call from the dealer saying my car will go into production at the end of October and be delivered in Feb 2018. Aaaargh. I don't know if I can wait that long.

    Anyone hearing anything different?
