Arrikham,
Have you ever had the software updated on your system? I remember the first generation MIB units needing a patch or something to allow updates with the downloaded maps.
I havent got that unit but the one that has to have the original VW card would need to be done through Discover Care wouldnt it so it can put it on the real card as it must have a hidden file on it that initializes with the headunit
Also sounds like you have the wrong map for the unit

Now - T-Roc R, Audi Q5
Past VWs- T-Roc R-Line, Golf 6, 7 and 7.5, Touareg 7L and 7P, Passat B5.5, Polo MK3, Polo MK4 and GTI
I'm not copying back any hidden files.... (original files) so i dunno ...
It is so hard to find specs of of WHAT unit I actually have, or to identify a model from the unit settings. I have a 2013 Golf Highline and cannot find out much more about what specific unit came in the release of the car in Australia. Does anyone know how to do this? I have tried both files at the end of the day and neither work. I have tried both files with the discovercare software and neither work. Also sounds like you have the wrong map for the unit
I might have to inquire with VW directly (not Australia). thankyou everyone for throwing in suggestions. This is a great forum !!

I didnt mean you were copying hidden files. The original card must have something embedded in it as other cards wont work ,
You should have got a book with the manual that pertains to the entertainment unit in the car
Read through this thread as by putting your partnumber into GOOGLE this came up

Does anyone have the original maps for a 2013 golf mk7 for discover media?
I tried to update the maps last night, and made a backup with discovercare, but silly me made a backup over the backup...and now i don't have the original maps.
As it seems i need the firmware - i now don't have maps functionality!
I’ve read loads of posts trying to find the solution to my maps update issue. I’ve done the download, extract & transfer onto original SD card and tried it onto USB too thinking the card was the issue. It seems I’m probably missing some embedded file that activates the update and I stupidly didn’t back up the SD the first time I updated so don’t have a copy to fall back on. The system (discovery) tells me the sd card contains the navigation data but then it tells me to insert a valid media card (can’t remember the exact wording). I’ve followed suggestions to reformat the sd and re-do but it keeps coming up with the same prompt. When I go to system update (to see if that offers any clues) the navigation data line is blank. The sd card simply has ‘maps’ folder with a whole lot of sub folders underneath. Maybe there’s an embedded execution file missing?
The firmware may be what I’m missing too! I just posted my query but hadn’t seen yours until I posted the reply!
I believe the our/your problem is the SD cards are encoded with a hardware key or passcode. The head unit reads this to decide if valid. The code can only be written with a hardware device. I have read this elsewhere, and is used in other systems. The upside is you cant really damage the code. I also thing that unless a set of working maps are on the card it wont update. I suspect also that the code determines maps regions etc.
There is no execution file, just maps data and config stuff.
I think that if you copy valid maps data back to you SD card it should work for you again.
If you send me a PM I can send you an image of my SD card that you can copy to yours. I think that will get your working again.
