Having also got the VW email about update (post above this), just rang my northern Perth suburbs dealer to try and get it done. Who promptly said they can't do it for many VWs, it doesn't work as it is meant to, try again in 'a few weeks'. Whose ears didn't appear to prick up when I said 'unlock Map Care maybe'. Aaargh! Love the car but the wetware seems to be lacking.

If it's free for the first 5 years, but it took them 3 years to fix the Map Care issue, does it it start from now?

The only good thing about that dealer is they offered free map updates. It may've been because I purchased my last 2 vehicles from there, though i'm pretty sure it's standard practice, unless things have changed.

Forgive me I have had a quick read thru this thread but am an old fart and have an apple computer. All this talk about getting updates but can anybody tell me if the updates are actually up to date? Are there any improvements to the voice direction? My impressions are this Nav is crap, you can't understand the stupid computer voice, it takes you on terrible routes and the maps are so out of date it's not funny. In a lot of cases if I didn't have a rough idea of the roads it would get me completely lost. My iPhone does a much better job. I took my Golf in for it'd first service about three months ago and asked them to update the maps and they told me my maps were up to date. Now with about 25000 km the transmission is starting to make a lot of noise especially in stop start traffic. Why are these inbuilt Navs so crappy

Because, like almost everything else in the industry, maps are tendered for, and since they're not obviously safety-related, don't affect vehicle life or performance and are virtually impossible to lodge a warranty claim on, what you get will be the cheapest on offer.

I had the voice "updated" (reluctantly, the service guy "hadn't heard of it") on mine at the last service and the invoice noted that it had been done (with a disclaimer that suggested I mightn't like it,) and they were more-or-less correct — some things improved, others got worse.

After nearly three years of dealer duckshoving I've finally contrived to update the original maps and yes, the latest, (officially dated May 2016,) whilst it has some changes is far from up-to-date.

If Google et al can do it?

Latest maps do seem to have more streets in my immediate area.

Also, the 'Split View' may have more/different options. Can't say for sure as I don't use VW Nav often (use Apple Maps on CarPlay, though if I could use Google Maps, I would...).

OK for those having trouble navigating the navigation.com website, which someone seems to have specifically left Australia out of (I'm sure on purpose), here are some tested links. Note that these maps have all been tested on a 2015 Golf with the Discover Media 5.8" (Gen 1) unit.

(I also noticed that the navigation.com website is very slow. An hr to download some of the zip files on 100mbit fibre).
