Key replacement

Hey guys,

I’m fairly certain I’ve lost my spare key to my Golf - an expensive thing to loose.

From what I’ve heard most dealers will wants around $500 for a new key + programming. Can anyone recommend a cheaper option or if any specific dealers are cheaper than others in the Sydney region? (My car doesn’t have keyless entry/start of that helps).

I do actually have a Mk7 key sitting in a drawer from my previous Golf which was written off, obviously the metal blade would have to be replaced with a new one and cut to match my current car but does anyone know if this key could be coded to match my current car? I wonder if a dealer would play ball with this?

Mate, we all lose a key to a modern car ONCE. After you've suffered the indignity of the daylight robbery which is the replacement key charge, you'll put the spare in a safe somewhere and guard the main key with your life.

Have you considered seeking advice and/or assistance from a reputable locksmith ?
Some of those have significant expertise with automotive keys.
Google is your friend.

Arguably of no relevance to your situation but I was in a similar situation to yourself losing an unlosable VW Golf key. Myself and my wife shared a VW Golf and each had our own key. Hers went missing (at a time when she only driving the car about once a fortnight). We hunted literally everywhere we could think of and no sign of it. I researched a replacement key and unfortunately then as now all roads lead to VW for a replacement with coding etc. I got quoted some astronomical figure by VW so was left with no choice but to struggle on as a single car key family to give myself a chance to get over the shock. So about 12 months later I manned up and ordered the new key. And I swear the old key turned up a few weeks later in a pocket of some sports bag!!!
So I reckon cool your heels ordering a spare at this stage, struggle on with one key being extra careful with it and I will bet the lost spare will turn up somewhere!!

Hey guys, I ended up waiting to buy a new one and found the lost one a week later! thankfully avoided the $$$ of a new one...

Lost keys can't be found at all that's why buying new one from a locksmith near is great option.
