    JB1 Long term users?

Hi All. Thinking of getting a JB1 for my 7.5 GTI.

    Burger Motorsport JB1 Tune – VW / Audi / Skoda – EA888 – AutoInstruct

Just wondering if any on the forum have some long term opinions on this device.
    Noticable improvement?
    Ease of install/removal?
    Reliability/warranty issues?

Any my real world observations appreciated.

I was in a similar boat and not sure when I bought my R but decided the JB1 was a low risk power up compared with a full tune, as warranty retention was important for me. So I took the plunge after an eternity of research.

Had the JB1 on my R for almost 2 years. Very noticeable improvement in performance across the rev range but especially in the mid range where it’s a profound improvement. They should be like this from the factory- a very quick car indeed!

With low rise ramp extensions to lift the nose for access to lower plug you can get removal down to about 10 minutes. Super easy. I removed before each service and no issues. Had only one warranty requirement which was a pendulum mount replaced under warranty. Can’t say if the JB1 caused the issue (certainly don’t think so) but it was replaced no question.

Best bang for buck mod you could ever do to a Golf in my view.

How noticeable is it? When you take it off for a service, the car feels like a bit of a slug. Not many could say that about a Golf R... Owners with a JB1 or 4 fitted know better..,

I bought mine before the JB4 was released but not too fussed about having a tell tale wire left in when going for service so I’m happy with a JB1. I don’t need to change the map on the run as I want all the power all the time!! Suited me just fine.

Oh and mine was a mk 7 not 7.5 so was the 6 speed DSG. Improvement on the 7 speed mk 7.5 would be even greater I imagine.

    Hope that helps you

Post note. Just read yours is a GTI. I can’t say but I would hesitate to guess the XDL will be activating a whole lot more with the JB1as the kick in power is significant. I could really tell when the Haldex came on in the R, especially in the wet. Huge fun on wet roads with a JB1 kitted Golf R...

If yours has the full LSD, it might be OK but if not, the XDL can be pretty harsh when it kicks in especially on uphill corners. You would need to dial in the throttle a little more carefully in these situations in the GTI with the JB1 fitted as there is a serious improvement in power delivered!

    Enjoy... 👍

I ran my JB1 for 2 years. I never had a problem per se but I did have the turbo replaced under warranty (which I was at the dealer’s choice after I reported the metallic ringing sound). However, like LibraR, I can’t say for certain that the JB1 caused it. It had symptoms like the early Mk7s were known for so I suspect it was more design failure than JB1.

Because my car was a manual, I ran it in conservative Map 6 to reduce stresses on the clutch. The car without it was a bit sluggish. With it, it was manic and very involving.

If I had kept it longer, I’d have replaced the clutch and let the JB1 do its thing properly!

As for removal, I took it out for every service (and it was never mentioned by my dealer). I would jack the car up so it would take me about 15-20mins to do. Easy enough though. The only issue I had was that I was a bit rough one day and broke the secondary retaining clip on one of the plugs. The fit was so tight though, it didn’t need to be there and I never had an issue with it disconnecting during driving.

    Definitely do it.

I sold mine on eBay a few weeks ago, so if you don’t like it, there’s a 2nd hand market to sell it on. Make sure you get the data cable so that you can change the maps.

yep, will get the data cable. Or the BT thing. Is the default 1’ map the best place to start?

Yeah, start with Map 1 and then start reading the Burger Motorsport forums as George is very generous with his time about how to get the best from it.

The beauty of the JB1 is that you can tweak and play to your hearts content to deliver a map that gives you exactly what you want.
