GTI issues what to do

Hi...so my 2017 GTI PP 80,000K had a warning light and was running very rough for 5 minutes then went away.

Diagnostics reveal

- 006704 Leak in Air Intake system
- 004080 Cylinder 2 misfire detected (P33B0)- During manifold injection
- several other references to Cylinder 2

my local garage is wary to help, they cleared the codes and said come back in week, mentioned possible need to clear carbon build up / port clean.

Should I do that as a matter of urgency or wait to see if the issue retruns.

My 2015 GTI has both direct injection and port injection = no carbon buildup. Does yours have both?

Cylinder 2 misfire, hopefully/possibly just a failing coil pack or spark plug. Easy cheap fix if either of those.

As for the air leak, check all your hose clamps and see if there are any obvious wear/holes in your intake pipes.

My GTI is a 2016 PP so if yours has direct injection and port injection can I assume mine does as well ?

Not exactly. VW seemed to alternate and some GTI's and R's do have both, and others have just direct injection. No idea why though.

You would have to physically look at your inlet manifold to see if you have 2x sets of injectors, or just 1x.

Really???? I'd die swearing that all EA888.3 had both injections.

Second thing I learned this week... The other one was that I always believed that Audi never produced an A4 Avant B8.5 manual until I found one for sale in Carsale.

Yes that's right and they also brought in, much to my surprise, some manual B8.5 wagons/Avants too (the B8 wagons were all autos in Australia, but there were always B8 manual sedans offered), but the B8.5 facelift look better, has a bit more power, as hte optioon of alcantara seats and I believe the engines used less oil.

My first choice was to get a near new B8.5 manual Avant instead of the R, but they were too pricey, and they very seldom come up in the used car classifieds, which proves they brought very few in.

I also assumed all Oz Mk7/7.5 GTI's and Rs were direct injection.

In America they are direct injection only, so a popular upgrade for people going for big power is to retrofit the port injection setup so they have both direct and port injection. But in Australia, I believe (dont quote me - but I believe) they are a bit of a mix with some being just direct injection and others having both direct and port injection.

Its easy to check your car, pop the bonnet and pop the engine cover off. Then just to the right of the oil filter you will see a black plastic fuel rail thats just above the inlet manifold runners. Look carefully and you can see an injector just before where the manifold runner joins the head of the engine. These are the port injectors. There are 4 in total of course, one on each runner.

The direct injectors are underneath the inlet manifold, you can see them and the fuel rail (silver metal fuel rail to withstand the crazy fuel pressure these require) but they are pretty well hidden and you will need a torch.

Issue is Error is for circuit of manifold port injector n533.

Tested injectors and wiring found incorrect resistance of injector n533- replace and retest.

Also they say "Visible liquid coolant leak from thermostat housing" I assume this is the water pump issue ?

Some thoughts on this.

Today I replaced the inlet manifold on 2017 Polo GTI (1800 EA888.3) with both port and direct injection. Incidentally it is exactly the same motor as MK7 Golf GTI with only 2 differences being an IS12 instead of IS20 turbo and a different crankshaft giving 1800cc instead of 2000cc (rounded).

The inlets in the head had quite a bit of carbon build up at only 49000km ..... Since it was open already, I cleaned it but was amazed at what it looked like. Alas, did not stop to take any photos though.

Yep, thermostat housing is one of the common leaks. IMO, you don't replace the water pump without replacing the thermostat housing as well. And vise versa.
