Ok cheers yeah I have seen that before. Good video. Lol at his reference to the umbrella in the back! I was wanting to see the leather seats etc and actual Wolfsburg additions but I guess that will have to do until reviews become available.

OK a bit of an update for those still sitting on the fence.

Currently there's around 2/3 of the 200 cars coming in that are already showing as allocated/sold. Of the remaining 30% there are virtually no blue left, a few white and the remainder are limestone grey.

There are cars on the docks at the moment and vehicles arriving over the next couple of months. A lot of dealers showing to have cars available are the regional dealers so if your dealer isn't prepared to look on the system for you it may be that you need to get on the phone and ring some of the smaller regional dealerships to hunt down the car that you're after.

As far as a regular Golf R wagon it's not on the price list. For the Golf R hatch there's a price adder for the Wolfsburg edition but the wagon just has the price for the Wolfsburg wagon. It may come back as another special edition model later in the model cycle but I doubt you'll see it as a regular model. It's a bit of a niche vehicle.

Can I ask how your source your information? I'm not questioning its accuracy, just interested to know if you have access to information normally only privy to dealers. Also, who has determined the market for the Golf R wagon is "niche" only? I would have thought a regular Golf R wagon might fill the vacuum left behind with the demise of the Passat R36 and its popular wagon. I recently met someone at a Volkswagen Driving Experience Day who fits this very scenario.

Hey Mikey I just do what anyone looking into buying one of these cars do - ask lots of questions!

I have a friend looking at getting an R wagon and so had a chat to one of my local dealers to get some more info for him - mainly to help in his decision making. The dealer was happy enough to look on the system to tell me what cars/colour combinations were available in the state and they also gave me some more general info regards to the situation Australia-wide.

I agree that with the demise of the R36 that the Golf R wagon would be a reasonable alternative for a lot of people. As far as whether the Golf R wagon is going to make it here in a non-Wolfsburg spec I really don't know. It's all speculation at this point but given that it has only been brought in as a special edition the only thing you can work on (in terms of a buying decision) is that once these vehicles are sold there will not be any more at least in the short/medium term.

The B8 Passat is only being sold in a 132TSI and 140TDI spec at launch. At the moment there are no approvals for a higher output Passat and certainly no 6 cylinder options. The new Skoda Superb has a 162TSI and 206TSI AWD option (Mk7 Golf GTI/R engines) so I think that you'll not see a V6 in any of the MQB platform vehicles.

There certainly seems to be a bit of a gap in terms of having a high output wagon.

Thanks for clearing that up. Your local dealer seems like a great source of information, and your sharing of it should be highly appreciated by all.

In my opinion, the fuss made over the Golf R wagon Wolfsburg Edition would make little impression to either a dealer's bottom line or that of Volkswagen Australia, no matter what people pay for it. However, upon reflection, making the Golf R wagon a mainstream model might be a risky decision, given the extreme popularity of SUV's. Wagons from all manufacturer's have taken a huge hit over the past few years, and the Golf R wagon may be no exception. So I agree with you, if you want a Golf R wagon, now might be your only opportunity.

Yes there's definitely no guarantees that you'll be able to get a Golf R wagon later. Only thing for certain is there's limited numbers now and they will likely be sold out soon after hitting showrooms if not before.

I bought a Wolfsburg edition wagon because my current R36 lease runs at the end of the month and I wanted another performance wagon to replace it. Ultimately I paid about $6k more than a standard MY16 R hatch, but I didn't want to risk waiting in case VW didn't bring any more wagon versions - as there is no other new car currently available at around this price that is any better than the R36.

It is a shame VWA won't be offering the Passat B8 biturbo diesel. It puts out 500Nm of torque! I had my heart on that model when there was whiff of it coming to Aus.

The biturbo diesel wagon was my first choice, but it will not be available in Australia until at least next year (if at all).
