    Golf R Special Edition

    Hey all!

New to the forum and just returning to Oz from living overseas for the last decade (Kuala Lumpur and Houston Texas). Had a mk6 GTI in the US and have just put my name down for the Golf R special edition apparently due out before the end of the year Golf R Special Edition. Haven’t seen much about this release so wanted to start something so I can learn as much as possible about this and the R in general.

    Carsales review: Access Denied

Hoping to hear about others ordering the car and get updates on when the cars are entering the country and being delivered to folks!

I’ve ordered the Lapiz blue, with sunroof option. This is the only option on the special edition so it’s basically spec’d out when there’s glass on the top Golf R Special Edition

Anyway, hope to read more about the mk7 R!

Ps, is the special edition classed as a mk7 or mk7.5? (So I know what to search for when it comes to nodding in the future).

    Cheers!

    It's a 7.5. You're going to love it.
Really wanted the Akropovic system for my mk7 but was simply too expensive.

    Congratulations.

Yes the standard R is a bit sanitised, so this thing with the Akra is a nice improvement. Hopefully there are some dealers willing to budge on retail like they did on Wolfsburg last year because at full sticker price it's a bit over the top and heading into a different price point.

I wouldn't buy one but I note they finally went wild and crazy and included the Turmeric Yellow option!

I agree full sticker is a lot for a hatch. Comes out to a hair over A$70k (at my first dealer). Tryna get them to throw in an extra set of 18” Pretorias to help ease the pain.

Make sure they have included the 5 year warranty - supposed to be on all Golfs sold before year end.

I don't have an issue with a $70k hatch (having spent more on one myself lol); I do have an issue with a $70k Golf R hatch though.

The Akra is a nice addition, but in comparison a Wolfsburg *wagon* was more than 10% less last year ?! (and I had a two month plus loan car included on change over).

The Pretorias have never been anything other than a special edition wheel here in Australia (other than by overpriced dealer order which I'm not aware anyone ever did), so I doubt you'll get your hands on an 18" set. If I understand from overseas the 18" version is a much cheaper cast wheel aka heavy, as well.

Plenty of nice options in the wheel thread though.

    Golf R Special Edition

Yes, I’ve spent some time in the wheel thread already (only signed up yesterday .

Tryna get my head around rim sizing dropping down. According to this site Rim & Tire Size Calculator. Custom Offsets - Wheel-Size.comgoing from 19 Pretorias to 18 Pretorias gives me a 1.5% change in speed/distance. Not too bad. I don’t suppose the speedo is programmable…?

BTW both dealers I’m talking width seem to think they can get their hands on the 18s, we’ll see what happens there.

To turn it back to a Special Edition thread (and not a wheel thread), one dealer in Melbourne sent me a pic from his office this morning looking out to a Special Edition on his showroom floor, albeit without the sunroof…

    (Edit, better image)

    Good place to waste time.

1.5% is within tolerances, no idea on the speedo front - I'll leave that to the VCDS geeks.

A 235/40 is only a 0.3%/2mm variance which is basically tyre wear, so that might be an option as well. I don't know if it's still the case but for a long time 235/40 was a fair bit cheaper than 225/40 as it was a Falcodore sizing.

BTW both dealers I’m talking width seem to think they can get their hands on the 18s, we’ll see what happens there.
Interesting - will be keen to hear how this turns out, I haven't heard many instances where a dealer has made an effort to source a non-Aus wheel!
