Thanks for the heads up. So you refused the dealer “detail”, and instead took it to somewhere else and got everything detailed and protected for $1100? Did they reduce the cost for foregoing the detail? Was this place somewhere in Melbourne?

I’ve yet to learn about protective coatings, but am familiar with detailing. I used to do a deep(ish) detail 3 times a year on my GTI in the US. I used mainly Auto Finesse products and the full clay bar treatment. They had a two-part chemical “wax” protectant. Loved how glassy the paint felt when I was done.

I’d be interested in a more permanent, or at least, a less often needed treatment solution.

Ahh nice to hear you take care of your cars...
to answer your question, I got no reduction on the delivery cost, instead I got offered VW paint protection for an extra $2500 on top of what you and I were quoted for delivery. My paint correction place is in Sydney, they are called Definitive Detailing and you will see them on this forum, they do all the nano tech, wax and self healing technologies.... I chose wax as I like to spend time with my car as I have plenty of spare time to waste. Ceramic coats work great too from what I have seen. Some use clear film but I’m not in that league of car investment.
Ive done Swiss Vax , California Gold and most recently Poor Boys Wax . The car had the most insane beading on my recent trip out in the rain, tip for amateurs is not to have the windows down in any rain and take s corner unless you prepared for a sheet of water in your lap or all over your armrest. PS I find a spray on wax after washes extends the time you need to take before the clay bar decontamination and next wax job is required. Oryx pearl has taught me a lot about how quickly a car gets dirty!!! Enjoy the delema of deciding your paint protection.

Haha, thanks? I’ll get to protection after I figure out wheel/tyre options, which may take some time…

    Good info though, thank you.

I’ve run the 19in Prets on Conti tyres, stick like glue in the wet and taken the Pirelli on the track in 19 inch in the wet... both beyond my capabilities for daily/ weekend hooning about town. Might stick on the Michelin for fun next change. I’m running stage 1 high torque map on my Wolf 7.5 / hit a couple of good wake up potholes at high speed at 36psi tyre pressure but not suffered any damage that I know of..... 235/35/19 has served me well although I could run less tyre pressure- probably could try 34 psi for more comfort.

Thanks for the info on the 19 Pretorias. I’m investigating options (see wheel thread) it will in all likelihood drive the stock Pretorias for a while to gauge the comfort level. Not 100% sure which tyres come as stock. It I’d guess the Pirellis.

P zero are freakishly good, they were so good I spun the spare wheel in the boot without any dramas too! Loved every second of pushing them to the limit chasing the pro driver instructor.

I need to get back to my dealer tomorrow as to whether the glasscoat they're offering me is something I actually want. Given my car won't be garaged, I'm leaning towards a yes but I suspect the price is inflated vs. going through a third party.

You will almost certainly get a better job at a cheaper price from a professional car detailer - the profit margins on "dealer add-ons" to new cars are insanely high.

@bkpr and @zardoz - you are both in Melbourne, bypass the rest and go to the best - Dan at Dan's Garage. He won't be the cheapest but he is the best, and isn't *that* much more than the 'glass coat' quote you got zardoz.
