    If you can pick one up for $60-62k then it's about right, otherwise I'd save the pennies, buy a standard R and use the savings on the mods you want.

    That's surprising, I didn't think they'd bother.

    Having said that, they're not worth the outlay at that price, you're better off picking up a set of quality after-market rims.. but I am probably biased there.

    Yeah it’s something I’ve been thinking about this morning. The SE is $62K before anything else, and while I like the exhaust I’m not a performance geek so that and the brakes are a value I won’t really enjoy.

    I’ll have to price up an R, particularly if they can be configured with 18”s instead of 19”s. If not, the money I save would cover new wheels.

    It should be do-able under normal pricing, but a lot of VW dealers turned into smug asshats* last year with the Wolfsburg and refused to discount, so it was a bit of a hard slog to then find the dealers who were. Without the discount you're looking at a bit of a lead balloon price drop and agree you might be better off grabbing a standard R and spending the extras on some great wheels, maybe some lowering springs and your own exhaust (or whatever floats your boat).

    No 18s on the R, but then again you've already found a dealer willing to check into it for you. I'd still stick with the stock, and at least flog the new tyres to put towards a set of 18s. I'd still be inclined to retain the Spielbergs for sale down the track if you have the room.

    A quick look on carsales shows 12 new Wolfsburg Rs currently for sale at VW dealers (6 wagons, 6 hatches). All 2017 build, and considering it is now mid-November 2018 I'd say that refusing to discount has so far cost them quite a bit in finance costs and foregone profits. Sometimes it is better to recognise reality and stop holding out for something that isn't going to happen (well, not likely for all 12 cars IMO ).
    2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

    Well, being a stickler for aesthetics, I really dislike the oval-shaped exhausts. I’d very likely get them chopped off and replaced with chrome round tips. Sounds crazy, but that’s what I’d do. Probably a grand in that mod alone I expect but I’ve never had anything like that done before (relative mod newbie) so I could be wrong.

    I'd still stick with the stock, and at least flog the new tyres to put towards a set of 18s.
    Yeah, I’ll get them to price one up but I don’t think they’d budge on a standard R either. At least I’d get my preferred choice of colour: grey.

    Half of me is saying “bargain a little bit, but then f*#k it, you know you’ll appreciate it, it’s only money (my wife’s with me on that (!!!))”, but the other half is all like “yo, will you even feel the difference in larger brakes and a light exhaust for 99.9% of driving?, you’re coming from a GTI…”

    100% agreed.

    I did see some guy trying to flog a second hand wagon with 20k on the clock for what I paid for my new one.. so reality or lack thereof seems to float around that market space!

    I was never a big fan of the twin ovals, although over time they grew on me enough to let them go.

    Longer term I was keen to do what you are describing though, as I had a white Wolf I had a set of HRE FF01s in black ready to fit and was intending on chopping the tips and chucking on something gloss black to match the other exterior bits. In the end that project got cut short when I went in a different direction..

    I think you should be able to get out of it for a lot less than that, depending on what sort of tips you want and where you source them from. I chopped the tips on my Mk6 GTI for a different set and I cannot recall the labour component but it was less than $200. I don't think at the time the tips were more than that either, but that was a single tip x 2. If you're sticking with quad then that logically adds to the cost.

    Guarantee you will get a chunk off a stock R. You should still be sitting under $60k with Dynaudio and roof if you want them on the road.

    Put aside some time aside over the last week of November and let them know if they meet your price you're signing on the spot, the usual end of month gig. And I wouldn't be afraid of shopping interstate to keep pushing the price if need be.

    Good luck with that, you might get lucky but instead of one umbrella for the car you might just get four , one for each door like I did a year ago on the Oryx
