Volkstech in Heidelberg West. Stage 2 is awesome, by the way - major power increase over Stage 1.

Hey andrew7, just an update for you and any other readers.

Had my actuator arm replaced by the dealership on Saturday. Monitored on Saturday and This morning. The worst of the problem appears to have been resolved. I could take it up to 3-4k and change up, and just hear the gear change, no more annoying rattle.

There is still some rattle at slow speed, but sounds more like it's actually coming from the wastegate itself. The weather has been cooler, so I will continue to monitor and make sure the fix is not temperature dependant.

Will report back again after a week or so.

^ Oh that's good news AT, which dealer did you use? Would you also mind sharing the report/paperwork from the dealer, as this will assist those of us with R's to request a similar fix (I haven't heard this is a fix applied to our R's thus far)

Strange... That wastegate actuator rod issue was specific to the MK6 - from what I've heard, they haven't been applying this 'fix' to the MK7's because they'd fixed it from factory on the MK7. Very weird.

Tech said it applied to MK7 up to MY13s, they then fixed it by welding the problem area.

As my car is MY15, it had the welded rod. But seeing as we were pretty sure the noise was related to the wastegate operation, they'd replace the rod to see how we went. Failing that, they'd have to replace the actual gate itself.

I went to Cricks Highway at Springfield in Brisbane.

If you dont want to replace your DP, you can see if an exhaust shop can wrap the flex joint with heatproof exhaust wrap. This will reduce (or stop entirely) the vibrating sound, as the metal cage around the flex joint wont be able to vibrate. Shouldn't cost you much more than $100.

Alternatively you can wait for VW to come up with a fix, but I seriously doubt they will fix this, given the fact that they'd have to redesign & replace or at least modify the downpipe to remove the cage or something. Neither of these options are a simple fix - it's highly unlikely that they will outlay that much investment for a 'small rattle' (in their opinion).
Getting back to your earlier post above Jon, I don't think it is the heat shroud rattling. To me it sounds like the waste gate rattling/vibrating (just watched this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUimU2C2H8U ; to me the sound is exactly like when he manually opens the waste gate just multiplied by about 1,000!).

Assuming that you had the exact same rattle (metallic cymbal rattle sound at low RPM's the closest/best description I think) before your new aftermarket DP fixed it, could we theorise that an aftermarket DP creates better airflow/exhaust flow out of the turbo thus reducing the wastegate rattle on some of the Golf turbo's affected (does the wastegate now open more definitely under higher airflow thus not rattling)?

Before I leap in to an aftermarket DP (and of necessity thereafter a tune to adjust for the aftermarket DP as I understand it (?) (is an tune a necessity/will there be a CEL post installing an aftermarket DP??) and potential loss of drivetrain warranty I would like to be 100% sure it will be effective. Failing that I guess those of us with R's could push for wastegate/arm replacement and see if that helps?

Any/all input appreciated (desperate for a fix)!

I've always thought the same about the noise I have.

Back to my service report it says:

"Unfavorable flow conditions in the turbocharger leads to a pinking noise. Carried out road test with customer & confirmed noise. Compared with same model vehicle & found noise to be the same. (note: I wasn't present for this) Checked & found TPI relating to customers statement. Found noise to be unfavorable flow conditions in the turbocharger which leads to a pinking noise. This noise is construction related and normal. There is no parts dam"

My noise is definitely audible from idle up to about 2500rpm, not the higher range mentioned by agentthumb. I think you might be onto something Andrew in that the DP isn't the source of the rattle but changing it changes the airflow in the turbo and eliminates the noise.

I'm going to drop into a dealer at random and test drive another R to see if it has the same noise.

^ Agree, a bigger aftermarket DP should address the 'unfavourable airflow' in affected 7R's (Nb. Just the other day a vwgolf.net.au member reported elimination of the rattle with an aftermarket DP). And by the way, I'm in the fairly unique position of being on to my 3rd 7R (don't ask!), and I can categorically state that my previous 2 7R"s did not have the rattle.

My current plan is to install a CTS DP and simultaneously a JB1 tuning box to get elimination of the dreaded rattle and better performance 👍 (not keen on a ECU reflash tune at this stage, keen to keep the warranty)

Bump on this issue, anyone making any progress on resolving this rattle of late?
