I'm getting the JB1 and thought it was simple enought for a self installation? Just 3 plugs in the engine bay and the 4th one that may require removing a few screws from below to remove the plastic cover then install? Doesn't seem that hard.

It wasn't clear that the flex joint/heat shroud is the source of the rattle, at least from under the car. It was really hard to pinpoint where it was coming from which was frustrating. I'm going to see if I can put up with it for awhile longer before deciding whether to bite the bullet with JB1 and DP (just wish there was someone who could install the JP1 in Melbourne).
I don't think it's something which can be replicated without load on the engine. If you put the car in neutral and rev it, you dont hear the noise anywhere near as loud correct? It's the load on the engine + revs which provides the condition for it to vibrate I think.

As DKC mentioned, it's pretty straight forward to install. You just need the right screw bit to remove the plastic under-tray (I believe it's a Torx bit).

I had the same sound on my 500km MY16 R as well, it is noticeable around 2000-2200rpm when the engine sound is not come up, it is bit annoy for the sound but not a "problem" need to be concern?

Absolutely no need for concern. It's definitely not doing any damage.

As an additional update I had vw here in Adelaide checking this noise out. They admitted it existed and compared it to other cars including a gti (I have an my16R) which all had the noise. They finally palmed me off with the usual induction noise excuse so no happy ending. They did say they would log it with vw though. Everyone needs to get into their local service centre and complain!!

Anyone with this rattle making any progress with a solution other than Jon who replaced his DP?

I sent mine back in for service to see if they could identify the problem any more. I went for a drive with the technician and he could hear the noise, and said he recognised it from other Golf Rs.

The report I got back after service states that there is a TPI from VW on the issue saying "Found noise to be unfavorable flow conditions in the turbocharger which leads to a pinking noise. This noise is construction related and normal. There is no parts dam..." (not sure if it was cut off at the end)

If the noise is there all the time (which it is) then it means those unfavorable conditions are there all the time too. I would say that constitutes a defect.

Unfortunate. But thanks for taking it in and reporting back. I suppose they didn't say if it was the waste gate of the a curator rod. I've really been trying to isolate this and seems to be coming right from the turbo area.

Question - do the gti guys have the rattle?

My GTI had a noise consistent with this thread, mainly noticeable on cold start and initial low revs.
