Thread: Golf R Metallic Ringing Noise

    Hi all,

    We have a 6 month old GTI PP with the same issue.
    It started at about 300km on the clock and now has 6000km.
    Have taken it to two VW dealers and test drove the vehicle with the tech inside.
    Both times they stated they could not hear anything. Then after pointing the sound out they agree its there.
    They advise that this is normal and that its the turbo spooling up. No idea if this is the case or not.
    But its really annoying. Sometimes its louder and other times quieter.
    So I have the music on minimal to mask the sound. It has really put a sour taste in ones mouth but what can one do????

    Not much unfortunately Pete. I would be making a small fuss about it whenever you put the car in for service. The more people complaining about it, the more likely they are to come up with a fix.

    Given where the sound is coming from though, I don't think it's going to be a simple fix. VW are more likely to just keep fobbing it off as a 'feature' of the engine.

    Hi Jon

    Just wondering how you were going after a month or so...sound still not there after replacing the downpipe?

    100% the sound is gone, not even a hint of the sound since installing the downpipe. That is a definite fix.

    If you dont want to replace your DP, you can see if an exhaust shop can wrap the flex joint with heatproof exhaust wrap. This will reduce (or stop entirely) the vibrating sound, as the metal cage around the flex joint wont be able to vibrate. Shouldn't cost you much more than $100.

    Alternatively you can wait for VW to come up with a fix, but I seriously doubt they will fix this, given the fact that they'd have to redesign & replace or at least modify the downpipe to remove the cage or something. Neither of these options are a simple fix - it's highly unlikely that they will outlay that much investment for a 'small rattle' (in their opinion).

    I'm waiting for another Guinea pig to test/confirm the DP fix theory (c'mon guys!).

    I took my mine to a local exhaust place recently, put it on an hoist and tried without success to locate the rattle in the visible part of the DP.

    I'm worried that it's somewhere closer to the turbo/waste gate (as per another theory mentioned previously). My concern is: I spend a bucket on a DP (and intake and tune) and am still left with the lovely metallic/metal ball in a glass jar rattle (nb I wouldn't otherwise feel the need to mod my R). Just wondering should I cut my losses and sell up as if entirely ruins the driving experience for me

    Could you reach the flex joint of the downpipe when you had it up on the hoist? Because I'm certain that's where the sound is coming from (did you see the Vimeo video posted earlier in this thread?). Would be handy to know if the flex joint is accessible without removing the DP. If it is, you could wrap it without having to remove the downpipe (thus, it'll be quite a cheap fix!)

    Jon, the flex joint and heat shroud was just visible, but would be very hard to wrap without removing the DP. The mechanic and I took turns under the car when it was up on the hoist with the other revving the car/putting into gear briefly and idling it. It wasn't clear that the flex joint/heat shroud is the source of the rattle, at least from under the car. It was really hard to pinpoint where it was coming from which was frustrating. I'm going to see if I can put up with it for awhile longer before deciding whether to bite the bullet with JB1 and DP (just wish there was someone who could install the JP1 in Melbourne).
