Back to my service report it says:

(note: I wasn't present for this) Checked & found TPI relating to customers statement. Found noise to be unfavorable flow conditions in the turbocharger which leads to a pinking noise. This noise is construction related and normal. There is no parts dam"

My noise is definitely audible from idle up to about 2500rpm, not the higher range mentioned by agentthumb. I think you might be onto something Andrew in that the DP isn't the source of the rattle but changing it changes the airflow in the turbo and eliminates the noise.

I'm going to drop into a dealer at random and test drive another R to see if it has the same noise.
I hope (for the sake of the guys who don't want to replace their DP) that the issue can be solved some other way.

I'm not sure if you've seen the video I posted up a while ago, but rattling the cage on the DP itself sounds remarkably similar to the vibrating sound that is caused at around 2500 rpm. As I can promise, removing that part fixes the issue. Kind of a smoking gun scenario isn't it? The whole "unfavourable flow conditions" sounds suspiciously like a dealer coming up with a wild guess at what the issue is. Even if they know what the issue is, they're up for 4-5 hours labour per vehicle, plus a newly designed downpipe (which currently doesn't exist!) to fix the issue. I can understand why they don't want to admit there's an issue!

Thanks Jon for your input. Agree the aftermarket DP is the solution. I'm wrestling then with the need to tune the ECU to adjust for the aftermarket DP and consequent effect on drivetrain warranty. Unfortunately down Melbourne way there doesn't appear to be a mob such as Sydney's Hills Eurohaus offering the (comparative safety of) JB1 with DP option. Major option for me is a reputable/recommended workshop who offer the Revo Stage 2 tune and CTS DP, so think I'm about ready to pay them a visit

That makes sense. Two quick pieces of advice - I've been having exhaust leak issues with my CTS DP. I'm not sure if it's just the way it's been installed, but it's taken a few visits to get it right. Thankfully the leak is down towards the mid-pipe section, so it's easily accessible, and doesnt require the subframe to be dropped! Anyway, if you can find a downpipe which is V-banded, or better yet, a custom single piece downpipe & midpipe, you'll avoid this issue. I'm not sure who the good exhaust places are down there, but the better ones should do a custom job for similar price to the CTS.

Secondly, the JB1 is a self-install job if your have a star bit for removing the undertray (bunnings), and a laptop. It's pretty easy to install yourself if you want to save yourself a hundred bucks.

^ Thanks for that (disappointing to hear of the exhaust leaks). I'll check with VolksTech on this issue as I know they've installed a few CTS DP's so far. My only concern at this stage is the rattle not performance so could i get away with replacing the DP without needing a tune?

My gf and dealership both told me I was hearing things.... I'm so relieved this is a real noise!
I actually took my R back the dealership... stood with the techs and pointed it out and they said it was a normal turbo'd car sound -_-! Fkn bastards

I went to North Shore VW yesterday to have it looked and was told the mechanic took it for a drive and then took another R for a drive and they were both the same so assumed it was normal operating noise and to monitor it. Also there is no clip to change on the 2016 R?

Bloody hell the noise is spreading amongst MY16 R's! To repeat I had a MY14 7R with no such rattle so it is not a 'characteristic' of the engine/turbo; I wonder why it's becoming more prevalent?? I'm joining forces with another affected party down Melbourne way, we might end up trialling a replacement non-OEM DP on one of our R's and see if have a fix....(the clip which fixed the MK6 GTI wastegate rattle does not work on Mk7 R's)

Any responses from dealers or fix's for this issue? Does anyone know exactly what it is?

Easy fix - replace the downpipe with aftermarket. Me + one other has done this. It works! 2015 wolfsburg wagon rattle, who else?? - Page 2

I think I posted this earlier but cannot be bothered looking back.

The noise I believe you guys are having is also on the S3s - certainly based on the descriptions it is.

It is also very different to the Mk6 wastegate rattle both in sound and fix (which VW eventually acknowledged and fixed for free).

And for FWIW, I had the ringing sound on my Mk7 GTI as well..

Always on cold start, low revs, and it either tends to quieten down after operation OR my brain eventually tunes it out in anger.
