The report I got back after service states that there is a TPI from VW on the issue saying "Found noise to be unfavorable flow conditions in the turbocharger which leads to a pinking noise. This noise is construction related and normal. There is no parts dam..." (not sure if it was cut off at the end)

If the noise is there all the time (which it is) then it means those unfavorable conditions are there all the time too. I would say that constitutes a defect.
I agree! However, the Audi S3 guys have been fighting pretty hard on this one without success. I am happy to join forces to fight it in Oz. (failing that it appears the only potential solution is aftermarket Downpipe replacement (having said that in my research I have seen the odd person say it hasn't made a difference- though the majority says its a fix. I don't quite understand the mechanism as to how it would eliminate the rattle.....i would be prepared to try a DP replacement but it would be a tad disappointing if it didn't work!!)

I know the DP replacement has been mooted as a fix but to me the sound is coming from the engine bay not from underneath the car. I'm toying with the idea of taping a cheap voice recorder somewhere in the engine bay to see if I can get a better recording of the sound.

    Golf R Metallic Ringing Noise

Don't know if it's related, but my MY15 103TSI has a metallic noise (sounds like someone playing a cymbal really fast) that's most audible whenever the wastegate is open. Ie. On boost, backing off and downshifting. The symptoms are consistent with the original post, with exception to the rpm range.

The dealer mechanics said this is not the same issue as MY13 models that needed a clip fitted as newer model actuator arms are welded to stop rattle.

The result is they have ordered a new actuator arm to see if it fixes the issue. Failing that, replace wastegate...

Noise comes in from driver side footwell, and resonates in the car if windows are up around 3-4K rev.

DP fixed my noise. The area that allows the pipe to flex is surrounded by a mesh, giving an effect like a Cabasa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabasa

That's good to know Bob (and you're positive you had the classic R/S3 metallic ringing/rattle under low revs?). What DP did you go for and where did you get it done if you don't mind sharing (and $ would be great)? I'm seriously ready to go down the DP path as the rattle is ruining what is otherwise a sensational car.

(and by the way I can confirm its not normal for the MK7 R to have this metallic noise as I've had 2 before that didn't have it! (don't ask :0)

Attached is a video of the Golf R Revo 3" DP installation, a lot more work that I thought it would be, but technically not to difficult if you have access to a lift.
The video gives a good look into what is in and around the DP. When he's taking the stock DP out, you can hear the flex joint making a familiar noise when he's twisting and tugging to take it out.

The metallic ringing is ruining the driving experience. I've had to turn the damn Sound Actuator back on to mask the noise a bit.

Whenever they release a decent update for the screen I'm going to take it in and show them the noise and ask them to make a report for VW HQ. As had been previously stated, the more reports there are the more likely something will be done.

In the mean time I will continue to be heavily tempted by the REVO DP.

I went with a CTS, because Revo was $1000 more! Paid $480 for the labour. I already had Revo Stage 1, so the upgrade to Stage 2 is only $69. If VW ask about the Dumpipe if I claim warranty, I can say it was because of the annoying noise they wouldn't fix... right? (/sarc)

^ Indeed, I think there's a fair argument in support of the need for stage 2 Where'd you get the work done? (I'm seriously considering going stage 2 as its either fix the rattle problem or sell the R! The CTS DP looks the best value too)
