Apparently there is a difference in quality between German and South African built golfs. Hope ours will still be sourced from Germany

I remember many of entry level BMW 320is in Singapore (E46 and E90) were built in South Africa and had endless problems.

Our 5 door MkV GTI was German made, but it had to be from a parallel importer. Oddly enough, both my friend's 3 door MkV GTI (all made in Germany) and ours had the roof lining detach itself after the 4th/5th year I think maybe they were not "tropicalized" enough.

From a price point, 70-75k max would suffice for a Golf RS, or else it enters the territory of BMW 135i/328i, Audi S3 etc which most people would probably opt for due to the badge.
These types of comments dont hold water and dont serve this thread well. By your account, someone could use the same argument by saying that a Golf GTi is not 2/3 times better than a Polo GTi, so they may as well stick to the Polo. Without disrespecting anyones status, you buy what you can afford, and everyone aspires to afford the best they can. Whether you like it or not, the R is at the top of the Golf tree for a reason, its better. This is the same reason BMW M3 buyers buy that car over a BMW 335, because they can and its better. If I owned a 335, I wouldnt be saying the M3 is crap because it's only 0.4 second faster 0-100 or whatever, it's the overall driving experience you get from selecting the car at the top of a modle line.

Hope I havn't offended anyones sensibilities by saying this, but I think it was about time it was said.

no disrespect WHATSOEVER to those guys who i respect and like, or to anyone who has purchased an .:R, however, i think you've yet to come to understand the brand/ model intentions/ what it's all about, in general.

all this crap about "one gajillion dollars buys so much more potential...".... get some.. ehem... , then take your little polo diesel to a drive meet that has cars like R33 GTR, R34 GTT, E46 M3, Porche 911, cayman S etc, like i did - people smirking at you in the parking lot.

you'll find that price point dont mean sh7t when it comes to a car's ability on touge, and neither will 598,00BHP on the next golf RS - power corrupts, and touge, where most of us enthusiasts spend their weekends (no, we dont all go to the track twice a week), is the true test of a car's abilities.

p.s. i mean no disrespect in my own post, but some people are so hell bent on "well i paid $14k more than the next guy who only got a GTI, so my car must be more capable"... i cannot accept that view, because i know better. and so do quite a few other "more capable-as-per-price-point" cars....

I think the point is who cares?

GTI is a good car. R is a good car. 118tsi is a good car.

You don't need to justify anything to anyone.
