Golf GTI MK7.5 Cold Air Intake System

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a Cold Air Intake system and have been informed that the K&N 69-9506TTK Typhoon Induction Kit fits VW Golf R/GTI (which was my pick) would not fit and is not compatible.

Has anyone had this successfully installed in their Golf GTI MK7.5 or is there an alternative suggestion?

Appreciate your input here.

Never seen anyone fit a K&N intake to a Mk7 GTI/R and there are so many other (better) options available that do fit and work such as Integrated Engineering, 034Motorsports, Racingline, Leyo, MST, Cobb etc.

Perhaps consider one of these other options.

I have the Integrated Engineering intake on my Mk7 GTI. It fits really well and sounds/looks great.

The aFe filter essentially makes the most difference on a stock setup, within a few % of other aftermarket set ups, pipes and elbows.

Just remember that a higher flowing filter for a given size is due to bigger holes in the filter media, meaning more fine dust/grit gets through into your engine/engine oil over time.
There’s a pile more testing on that site in the top menu.
Some intakes are not so much cold air as hot air etc.
And this is all just flow bench testing, which may or may not transfer into actual measurable kW gains, there is no dyno involved.

Edit: skimming through some of the testing the biggest potential flow gains are had from the best inlet elbows and pipes, not from the turbo muffler delete, though users say the TMD improves sound.

I did somewhat slightly overlook other brands of Air intakes and have check out 034 Motorsports which i am now leaning to. Thanks for the suggestion and that IE in yours looks great by the way!

I am not a fan of expensive CAI where they actually allow more Hot air than cold. I have done bespoke CAI on a few of my cars.

And the OEM AI is within a bee's dictionary % of other CAI. But many want the look of the CAI.

Rather than go CAI I brought a cheap AliExpress inlet elbow and silicon air intake pipe, not the turbo muffler delete. I then ported and polished the AliExpress inlet elbow which seems to improve flow.

I will consider modifying the OEM AI and looking for ideas to do so.

Not going to argue with you - I do like myself some under-bonnet bling and love the sound of an aftermarket air intake, so every car I own will always have its intake replaced or modified in some way to make it sound/look better.

Any actual performance gains from an aftermarket intake are negligible on most modern cars, unless you are chasing big power where the original airbox may become a restriction.

The better designed intakes are pretty well sealed off and with the car moving and getting good airflow, then hot air will not be a problem. The only time I could agree the aftermarket intakes would be worse than the factory intake would be in traffic/idling/very slow driving with limited/no airflow where the aftermarket intake would start to suck in the air from within the engine bay - although this would soon be rectified once the car is moving once again and getting steady airflow.

Well put Lucas_R,
I should explain that when I say 'not a fan', more noise is a negative for me. I have 'profound hearing loss' and extra irrelevant sounds just cause me to not hear what I want to hear with hearing aids. On that note I will be turning off the sound inductor soon.
