I was recommended to use something like Loctite or a glue to keep it down, would that be sensible? Has anyone else resorted to that?

I would only use a temporary glue (eg BluTac). If you use a permanent glue you may have trouble accessing the gear lever assembly (eg for the fix for the "place in Park" issue), and you may cause further damage trying to remove the trim any time in the future.

I had mine replaced for the exact same reason here in NZ with a stainless steel one. This was down for free as it was a recall.
