Given the Polo has gone up another notch in size I'd pick it every time.
Or stretch a touch to a low mileage second hand Golf GTI if the sizing is critical.
Life's too short to trundle around in a Comfortline.
Help me make up my mind!
The Golf Comfortline and Polo GTI are about the same cost.
The car will be the city runabout to get to work and perhaps to drop the kids to school.
I'd enjoy the fun of driving the 149kW Polo GTI, but would the stiffer suspension and smaller size make it not as practical for the family runs?
Is size and engine the main difference between these two amazing cars?

We had a polo GTI up until recently which was used by my wife for the school run. Once our kids hit 12 and 14 it started to get too cramped. School bags and stuff for high school are quite large so consider boot size too. We upgraded to a Golf GTI Original for $36.5k on road and it’s just right.

2015 Polo GTI & 2019 Golf R
Like Dutch77 says, the latest Polo has increased in size quite a bit, so best to have a good look at the new'un and see if it is big enough for your needs.
2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).
To confuse you even further by the time you option up a Polo GTi you are getting pretty close to Golf GTi territory. There is your sizing dilemma solved right there!!
So, is the main difference between the gold and polo, the size?
I'm hoping to get some options on the Polo, but if I were to get the Golf, I'd have the same options - ie Driver Assistance Package and the Sound and Vision Package which cost slightly more on the Golf!

Its not just the size and price. The Polo has 149kw and the Gold has 110kw. A huge difference in a small car. It has the same power as Mk5 Golf GTi.
Way more than just size and cost differences. They sit at different points on the automotive spectrum - for mine the Polo is a mini "hot hatch" while the Golf Comfortline is a hatchback with luxury car pretensions. Each offers compromises and trade-offs in areas such as performance, handling, ride quality, materials and finish, options and technology and so on. You need to decide where YOU want to be at on each of the key attributes and thus which car best suits your needs.
If I were in your position I would look around in late January (when the motor trade will be doing 'New Year" promotions), and look to take both the Polo GTi and a Golf Comfortline on extended back to back test drives.
My bad, I am aware of the 149kW vs 110kW in these two cars.
I WANT the Polo GTI as it would be more fun to drive. Admittedly, it will be a 10 minute drive to work and the occasional school drop off. Still, it will be fun 10 minute drives. I also want it because it is a new model.
If I was being sensible, I'd get the Golf Comfortline as it's probably more practical, being a little bigger. However, being a model soon to be outdated, I am a little reluctant (I know something new is always around the corner).
The question is how much more practical will the Golf Comfortline be? Will it be too stiff a drive for the kids?
Also, I thought the end of year would be better to bargain than new year bargaining????
My wife has the 110kw Comfortline its a nice car indeed roomy practical drives very nice not zoomy tho my golf diesel is tuned to 165kw and 480nm and its light years better and way more fun to drive same will be with the gti polo vs the golf Comfortline
If your after a nice roomy a to b car with good economy and a upmarket feel get the comfortline with the infotainment pack (my wife has this as do i very worthwhile upgrade)
If you want a car that is fun to drive and will take off when you put your foot down get the gti polo nuf said
(also the golf has the 7 speed dry clutch and the polo a 6 speed wet the wet being a better pick for longevity it does come with a expensive oil and filter change every 60k tho)
