I don't believe any of the coding changes I've done would void the warranty as I haven't changed any performance or safety parameters - ie everything works within factory spec.
You're right - a cheap android device is all you need to get going.

Had the Alltrack APR tuned today, big difference in acceleration. Happy so far.
Nice
Stage 1 ?
What power outputs have they quoted?
About 183kW, from the difference in acceleration seems about right I put my timing setup in the car and before without doing a hard launch so just stepping off the brake and onto the accelerator was about 8.2sec 0 to100 now 7.1sec and thats with the lag of the DSG waiting to take up. 2000 to 7000 RPM happens much quicker than before and it pulls a lot harder.
I'll do a hard launch today if I get a chance just to see what I can get down to. I'm still not used to driving an auto/dsg after 40 years of driving manuals. I wish it were manual.
Very nice bump in power i am impressed
Must be much nicer to drive now
I am still waiting for them to crack the ecu for my diesel so i can get mine done
Only 165kw tho
A 50kw bump in power is impressive you will be hunting those stock gti drivers now
If you like driving around corners instead of wallowing sround them look at upgrades to your rear swaybar
I had mine done with linkages replaced as well made a huge difference to the cornering nice and flat now
I usually run around on a set of these tyres they make a huge difference.Attachment 33936
Fuel economy update (diesel)
After 15k service i was averaging 6.9ltr/100 motor has freed up a bit that was down from the 7.1 i was getting
Then i fitted paddle shift extenders now getting 7.25ltr/100 maybe having to much fun?
Hi All,
Its been a long time since I've been on Watercooled. I've returned to the VW fold last year with a used GTD then late in the year I updated to a Golf Alltrack Premium 135 TDI, just with the Sports Luxury pack (so no digital dash/radar cruise).
Thought I would add some details here about my experience before asking a headlight question :)
Nice to see there are upgrades with power and suspension available for the car, sounds like they take it to the next level. If I was keeping the car long term these would be something I would likely take advantage of also!
I paid 45k with the Sports Luxury pack and misc accessories (tint/rear tray liner and rear sill plate), in red. I've worked in car yards for the last 15 years (2010 I was in Barloworld VW in Mascot...had a man Golf GTI for Christmas drive car....what a fantastic Christmas that was :) )...and the purchase experience in Hunter VW was interesting - especially dealing with the finance guy (which is what I do). I used VWFS Choice to finance the car - I know Ill not own a single car long term for a long time.
I've done 21000 km in 6 months (my daily work commute is 62km), with 80% of my driving at 80km/hr or more on "country" roads. If I try really hard (and usually I don't hahaha) I can average 4.9l/100km....normal driving gets me around 5.5l/100km and if I'm feeling spirited up to about 6.4l/100km.
My long term average is currently 6.2l/100km over around 1500km. In my GTD I was really consistent at 5.4l/100km - but of course thats a lighter car. This is all from the onboard consumption computer, which I've checked vs fuel in/km traveled method and its quite accurate. I did find that the economy improved markedly at around 5000 km and post 15000 km it has been a fraction better and definitely more consistent.
Overall I've been really pleased with the car. The fuel economy is pretty good, I love the AWD system (my first AWD car), its nice not scraping out of driveways due to ride height. I love the +1 AND +10 increments for the cruise control - so useful! I love the panoramic sunroof and the entertainment system, is pretty good.
The minuses (mostly minor) - I should have got the radar cruise (not fussed about the digital display, which would be nice to have). The standard Goodyear tyres are OK, but now starting to squeal (easy fix thought - will change to Bridgestone Potenzas when due). The rear camera seems quite low res (on a VW???). Why oh why doesn't VW program the sat-nav with speed advisory for ALL roads, instead of just the major roads?? No USB or power for rear seats seems a minor omission. Some annoying buzzes showed up in the cabin very early on (granted most roads I travel are coarse chip) - interestingly since the cold weather these have decreased however!
And now onto the biggest minus and my question....the LED headlights! I love the cornering function, and I love the quality of the light.....BUT....the throw of the light (distance) is woeful in low beam. Travelling on unlit roads they just don't project far enough..whilst hard to quantify, the beam seems to properly light up around 3 car lengths ahead only (basically 3-4 "dashed" road lines). When the car is loaded with passengers, the beam is automatically adjusted down, the beam distance reducing again and frankly its dangerous. I spoke to the service department about having them adjusted on 1st service, to be told they aren't adjustable. Next service I'm going to be more forceful about having them checked/aligned....I doubt Ill get any favourable outcome...so VW will be my next step. I fear there is no solution and Ill just have to put up with them. Obviously high beam isn't always a solution, but the high beam is fantastic however!
Can anyone with LED headlights on their car make any comments about their performance? I've googled and cant find any other negative comments on factory LED headlights. Other than automatically lowering with load, they are OK on lit roads for obvious reasons....the roads are already lit!
Sorry for the long winded post...
Hey Banger
I agree with you on the low beam throw its nice and bright just not pointing far enough up i could solve this issue with the mark 6 highline i used to have by using the adjustment on the dash but it's a no go with the led lights as they self adjust constantly shame i would like it a bit longer but as you say the highbeam is able to dazzle people at ranges of more than a kilometer so i do like that
The stock goodyears are rubbish glad i got them off mine nice and quick you should be able to go to 235 wide tyres if you like they fit fine on mine
Shame you did not get the radar cruise it's one thing i will never buy a car without now that i have had it
Your getting better economy than me :) but i do tend to be a bit of a leadfoot so much so that i am getting fed up with long travel spongy pedal feel i think there is a pedal box to be fitted in the not to distant future. I used to get about 5.1 in my old diesel mark 6 so 7.2ish is ok for the way i drive it being 4wd and a heavier car by about 300kg
Wow 21k in 6 months that's a lot i have done 18k in 10 months and thought that was a lot
Yeah my car is a long term keeper going to try to last it till the mark 9 (2029-2030?) comes out so need it to go for about 300,000k should be fine that's why i got the diesel instead of a R don't think a R tuned would last that long
Hi Kachingg,
I've admired what you've done with your car...that bit of extra power would top it off I think.
I've noted the rear end of my car now getting a bit looser on some corners I like to nail it around...but seeing the tyres are now complaining I put it down to less grip from them and the car having to work harder...but its still fun planting the foot around a right turn 90 degree and it sticking :)
I initially had Michelin Primacy 3st tyres on the GTD when I got it, others raved about them but I hated them (especially in the wet). I hated them so much I changed them with 60-70% tread left for some Bridgestone S003, and those were fantastic for me....so that'll be the next set. They are a bit more costly than on the GTD so the Goodyears will just have to wear out first.
Your comment on the LED lights sums up my fear that they are operating per factory specs. My current 30 minute evening commute is 99% unlit country roads with roo's everywhere...hence my concern with the headlights. Luckily I've only had 2 close calls....probably better low beam wont help (but would give the impression of comfort)
The fuel economy is harder to achieve than the GTD, but mostly I use cruise....although on the few times I didn't use cruise I rekon I got better fuel economy...then again could just be telling myself that!
I travel to Sydney usually once a week, which is just shy of 400km round trip, add in the 300km normal weekly to work, and sometimes an 80km round trip to Singleton or Newcastle....along with all the little stuff - the KM have been easy to rack up. At least if I sell it privately "all country KM!!"
The seats in the Alltrack are very comfortable for all that travelling (as you undoubtedly know), the air in summer works well too. More and more wish I had the radar cruise (will spec it on the next car)....too many people cant keep a constant speed on 80km/h roads....but it would have been something like a 6 month extra wait to option it - apparently the LCD displays were in short supply (maybe still are?)
By 2030 it'll be some sort of electric or at minimum electric hybrid you'll be upgrading to! But agree the petrol would be more problematic over that distance. For me the itch of a new car is to compelling...hopefully I can last 3.5 more years :D
Anyway, thanks for the reply....if I can find a solution for the headlight issue and catch the redback thats got into my car.......
cya
