probably depends on lease company, last company I used, used to allow anything that would be upto 7 years old and 100,000Ks on completion of lease. which means yeah upto 4 years old car if going for a 3 year lease.

yeah big blocker for me for anything 2nd hand and exotic has always been what happens when out of warranty as its very hard to budget for the unknown in leases and if something major was to occur would be outside of budget and straight out of pocket. so end up always leasing new cars myself as well !

even extending leases eg with my golf gti I found doesnt make a lot of sense, first I'd have to take out 2 years extended warranty whcih isnt cheap, then theres the jump up in maintenance cost they want to sting you on outside of warranty and then do the sums you might as well get a new car than re lease a 3 year old one ! .
    Once had a Red mk6 GTI + DSG + leather + sunroof + mdi + towbar

now have a gorgeous Red Merc A250 AMG Sport

Still they have said that this is a concept soo....
And supposedly around 100kg lighter than the current gti which is lighter than the Golf R, so yeah does not make much sense

For the sort of used <3yr old prestige cars you can get for <$60k they present pretty good buying. Considering a Porsche Cayman S costs > $120k, being able to get a 3 year old one with fairly low kms for about $60 - 70k is great value.
For me it is <8 years. You can even do a novated lease on a car that you already own provided it is less than 8 years old

The personal hurdle for me though is losing the security of the manufacturer warranty once it's older than 3 years. Which is why I always seem to get excited by great value near new cars but then end up buying a slightly less exciting new one...
I work for a novated leasing company and we allow used vehicles up to 9 years old at the end of the lease. So for example if you buy a 5 year old car, you can lease it for a maximum of 4 years (that makes it 9 years old at the end). Extended warranty could be something to think about if your worried about it, and your right it is good value as you are not taking the large depreciation hit when buying new (especially on an expensive car).
